Alfred King, Curragh Camp, and Elizabeth Woolley
« on: Sunday 24 October 10 19:05 BST (UK) »
My grandfather, Charles King was born on the 22nd January 1884 to Staff Sargeant Alfred King of Curragh Camp and His wife Elizabeth (Woolley) King.  Registrars district of Naas, District Newbridge, County Kildare.  Can't trace anything else till he died in South Africa in June 1916.  Would my great grandfather, Alfred, perhaps have been in the British Army or Irish Army?  Also trying to trace Alfred and Elizabeth's marriage certificate?  Many thanks for this great site. :)

Welcome to Rootschat. I've split your post from the long Curragh Camp thread so it won't get lost there.
Ireland was part of the U.K. until 1920s so you would be looking for details of the British Army (Kew, London is probably the place to search for records).

The Irish Civil Registration Index is online (free) but I can't see Alfred and Elizabeth's marriage there (you need to search for bride and groom separately)- here's the search under Elizabeth's name but no marriages- click
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

found possible siblings to Charles from the extracted births on familysearch :

 Alfred Ernest King / 24 Nov 1876 / Cork
 Emma Beatrice King / 24 May 1879 / Dublin / Ref: v 2-2 p 666
 John Edward King /  17 Nov 1880 /  Longford / Ref.: v 3 p 202

Parents : Alfred King & Elizabeth (Anne) Woolley

The extracted births contain some birth records between 1864 and about 1881.

The birth cert for Charles should show his father's occupation - which would usually mention regiment etc if he was in the Army.

Thank you so much Shane.  Just logged in now after some time.  I will be visiting Ireland from South Africa in June and will follow up on your suggestions.  It is really heartwarming to know that you are so willing to assist.  We are in a bit of a wasteland here in South Africa with virtually no knowledge of tracing our ancestors but thanks to this site all that has changed.

My father who was born on the 29th April 1919 was named John Edward King so I think we are on the right track.  His aunt's name was Beatrice Tutt - too much of a coincidence.
