Romany Names in The Midlands
« on: Monday 25 October 10 14:15 BST (UK) »
Hi To all,

I have been intrigued to start a search on My Romany Heritage via an Rumour that we have Romany Ancestry in my Mother's line. My GG Grand Parents were called Mayo - not a Gypsy name from England I have been told by a couple of Romnichals I have spoken to. However I showed old photos to some Ursari Roma from Romania who are in Brum and friends of mine, who advised My GG Grandparents were Romany based on the photos I showed and also My G Grandmother. I approached a 'Dukkerer' in the City centre who advised - no palm reading was done - that my G Grandmother has the features of the Lee Family. I need more Info please - My G Grandmother was Emily Mayo b. 1906 - Warwickshire.  Regards...

Have you identified Emily on the 1911 census?

There are two possibles there but.... one is born Herefordshire and the other Worcestershire! Do you have names for her parents?

I think you need to go back to establish whether there are Romanies in the family.

Hi,

I got from somewhere I cannot recall that maybe there names were Emily and George. That may be a long shot but I will try and get more info! Would seeing the photos help?

Regards

Hi,

I have been told by a Drabarni/Dukkerer who visits Brum from the Smith Family of Gypsies that my line of Gypsies may be via the Lee Family and maybe even the Price Family. Does anyone know of any Lee Family of Gypsies who have been in the West Midlands or Warwickshire as it was known years ago. Particularly - Birmingham/Balck Country area. Please help!
PS - Does anyone know of Davey Jones of the Gypsy Church Movement? - I have been told to contact him.

hi martkos

maybe this family are relatives

on the 1891 census at duddeston - aston - warwickshire

willm mayo age - 40 - born - clayhanger (nr walsall)
kezia mayo - 39 - nechells birmingham
mabel l mayo - 16 - nechells birmingham
william a mayo - 14 - perry barr staffordshire
nolet s mayo - 10 - perry barr
joseph f mayo - 8 - perry barr
george mayo - 7 - perry barr
alfred i mayo - 4 - perry barr
ethel m mayo - 1 - birmingham

willm's occupation is very hard to read , it looks like "leedainarn" on the census

interestingly there was a victorian occupation called a  - legerdemainist -
i wonder if this was willm's occupation as i can't see any other  occupation on the website -victorian occupations-  that looks similar

a legerdemainist is another name for a magician !  :)

http://www.census1891.com/occupations-l.htm

hope this is helpful
regards sally

Hi,

I would like someone to see if they can can find some information on these two people who married  - date not known - only their names - my G Grandparents.

Their names were Emily Evelyn Mayo and She married John William Ward in Birmingham or Warwickshire.

Also if possible could the names of the fathers on any possible marriage certificate be advised please.

Thanks

 Mayo Emily  Ward  Birmingham S.  6d 53
Ward  John W E  Mayo  Birmingham S.  6d 53

This looks like the marriage you want.  It was September Quarter 1924.

To obtain the parents you would need to see the certificate or find someone who was going to relevant Records Office who was willing to search for you..

Certificates can be ordered from the GRO website, quoting the volume and page references  ie 6d 53.

Hello,

i stumbled across this whilst searching for someone else:

1871 census

George Mayo born 1835 Sussex hawker
Elizabeth born 1839 Surrey
William born 1860
Ellen born 1862
Henry born 1863
Frederick born 1866 all Brixton,Surrey.
Emily born 1871 Godalming

living in a caravan in Godalming,Surrey.

RG10 piece 815 folio17 page 28

with them James Deacon and family.

You may already have it,if not it could be significant. At the very least it shows there was at least one Mayo family living in a caravan that might have travelled.

Nel.
