Joseph Henry Lugard b Dublin 1820s
« on: Saturday 30 October 10 17:46 BST (UK) »
I have found a distant relative who seems to have emigrated to Enlgand from Dublin. Joseph Henry Lugard settled in Brighton and married Marion.

It would be wonderful to find a little more about his Irish ancestors.

Kind regards to all

Hi Malcolm

The 1871 census for Joseph & Marion has him born in Maidstone, Kent in 1839 - and there is a birth registration for him there in qtr 1

Wondered what info you have to lead you to saying he moved to Brighton from Dublin?

His will says he was a cork merchant of 2 North Street Quadrant Brighton

Dazey

My mistake - sorry :-\
Marion was the daughter-in-law of Joseph H Lugard born Dublin 1805 (according to the 1871 census that has him living at 2 North Quadrant Street in Brighton with daughter Caroline). I think the Joseph you found is his son (also Joseph) who married Marion who, by 1881 is a widow running the cork cutting business from 4 Cranbourn Street, Brighton.
Caroline ended up running a boarding house in St Pancras. She died in 1912. Marion died in 1926, still in Brighton.

It's the Irish connection that is intriguing; the family used to talk about it and the possibility of being connected to Lord Lugard.

Ah yes - got you now.  Do you have them in 1861?  Looks like Joseph H Jnr was Sn'rs NEPHEW.  Snr did have a son Joseph - but he was Joseph Albert born in Brighton 1852

interesting the marriage I came across had Caroline as TOSSELL
There is a Caroline Lugard a seamstress aged 45 listed on 1851 census with son Henry and sister Eliza LOSSELL
just jotted a note of that; would need to go back for addresses.

I don't mean to hex this line of enquiry but is there any chance that Joseph LUGARD had two simultaneous relationships?

From what I have found starting with Joseph LUGARD who is described as a widower in 1871 aged 67

He married Caroline TOSSEL/LOSSEL on 26 Nov 1832 in St. Anne's, Soho, London
He is listed on 1841 census as JH Lugard (35) Cork Cutter in Strand, Middx
Caroline LEGARD (30), Caroline (7), Eliza (4) and Joseph (2) listed in St. Margaret's. Middx
He is missing in 1851          Caroline (45), son Henry (12) and sister Eliza Lossel (43) listed in Marylebone, Middx
He is missing in 1861          Caroline (57) and sister Eliza Tossel (53) listed in Marylebone, Middx
Joseph (22) a nephew is listed with Martha Lugard in Brighton
He is a widower in 1871 in Brighton Sussex with his daughter Caroline b. Middx. (37)

How can Joseph the Cork Cutter aged 22 in 1861 be a nephew to Martha when her husband was Joseph Lugard AND his Father was Joseph Lugard?

Then when you follow Martha; her husband Joseph is only listed once in 1851 aged 45 born in Ireland and he is a Cork Maker Master.

Curiouser etc.....
