Kennedy and Stapleton, The Mill, Cloughjordan
« on: Sunday 31 October 10 18:36 GMT (UK) »
Would be most grateful to find out anything about Kennedy ancestors from Tipperary. From family I am aware of a Jack and Mary Kennedy (1865-1941) who owned (?) and worked at 'The Mill' in Cloughjordan and at some point Jacks brother married Helen who also helped with the running of the mill.
I think their children were Pat and John Kennedy, who represented Tip at Hurling, and who eventually moved to New York and other children were Tim and Maria/Mariah/Mary. Maria married Richard/William (?) Stapleton and moved to Dublin c 1900. ( I have managed to get a few photos from the web of Tip hurling teams with Kennedys and Stapletons but not able to verify if relatives). Any information on the Kennedys or the Mill would be most helpful

many thanks

Sharp, Houlgrave, McCarrick, Quinn, Dougherty in Liverpool.

Hello,

do you mean that Jack and Mary Kennedy were both 1865 - 1941?

Is this Maria and William Stapleton in 1901?
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Dublin/Wood_Quay/Guinness_Trust_Buildings/1346972/

If so she would be born c 1866  :-\ ... am confused.  ;)

best wishes
heywood

thanks annclare - I don't know if this is the mill they worked at but it's quite substantial isn't it, absolutley not what I had in my minds eye! Are there any records of who owned or worked at the Mill?

heywood, sorry, I got a bit mixed up, as you rightly indicate, the dates are for Mary Kennedy, daughter, who married William Stapleton (census) and not Mary Kennedy, mother! doh! I don't have any dob or dod info on Jack and Mary Kennedy.

thanks

Hello again,

Have you searched Griffiths Valuation? I have had some trouble with the parish on this one but will explain here:

http://www.failteromhat.com is a straightforward site but does not show the Griffiths pages.
I found that Cloughjordan is in Modreeny parish and searched via these criteria rather than person to get Kennedys.
There are 16 entries for this name and some of those may be the same person with different properties.
Searching for Modreeny parish on http://www.askaboutireland.ie
(Tipperary North Riding) didn't show all the places in Modreeny parish (not sure if I have done it wrong and sorry for rambling).
However eventually - searching for  Kennedy in Mullenkeagh shows an Edward Kennedy has a Distillery and Corn Mill.
Now there may be other mills elsewhere - that's just one I found. There is a John Kennedy in same townland.

Sorry for the long winded message.

I was searching for my own relatives in Cloughjordan through the parish records in the NLI in Dublin. Cloughjordan was in it's own parish as far as I can recall, and there were LOADS of Kennedys. I remember this distinctly because we have (Dublin) Kennedys in the family and I was surprised to see the name pop up so often in my search.
Coyne (Dublin)
Donnelly (Dublin)
Duggan (Dublin and also Cork on another side of the family)
Higgins (Dublin)
Hyland (Dublin)
Keating (Cork)
Keely (Dublin)
Killackey (Tipperary)
Langstaff (married in Dublin but no idea where from originally)
Moriarty (Cavan but moved to Dublin at some stage)
Treacy (Tipperary)
Waters (Tipperary)

This William Stapleton was baptized 26 May 1864 in Dunkerrin RC Parish with residence location identified as Shinrone. He was the son of Francis Stapleton and Mary Gavan and married  Maria Kennedy in 1898 (daughter of Patrick). The marriage was registered in CLOUGHJORDAN Civil Parish records. His father and mother were still living at Brickanagh, Tempelharry Parish, King's Co. in the 1901 Census. I have the data on his other siblings if you need it.

Cheers,

Mike

That would be fantastic, many thanks. William and Maria have two surviving grandchildren (in the 80s) who will be absolutely delighted to hear more of their ancestors. If you were able to offer any further detail I would be most grateful, thank you so much. Are you related to them also?
