You wont find your man in the Navy Lists unless he was an officer. I tried the National Archives website 'Registers of Seamens Service' and the main catalogue for a pension application without any luck.

If you knew the name of a ship he served on, it is possible to piece together his career.

The Navy List only gives details of Commission Officers and Warrant Officers of Wardroom Rank (Surgeons, Pursers, Masters and Chaplains).  The latter group be "commissioned" in the mid 1800s I think.

Hi There,
Not a very good advert but I had a Great Uncle who trained and served in the Royal Navy called Herbert John Langmaid, born 10 January 1891 in Cornwall. On his training record it states that he would not learn how to swim, it is also a family known 'fact' that he was always afraid that he would drown. Anyway he jumped ship in 1913, in or near New York, USA and I would love to find out from what ship, when exactly and if there were any records of this matter. He was eventually caught and given the option of returning to the RN or joining the American Armed Forces, he chose the later and served in France, obtaining his American naturalisation. Any information would be most appreciated.

If you purchase his service record, which is downloadable, this will have his last ship shown with an 'R' against his name i.e. 'run'.

Thanks for that Martin, also good to know that it is termed 'Run' and not 'Jumped Ship'. Will have to think about the fee to just get a ships name. Thanks very much though at least I have a number and reference. Brilliant.

Cheers

There has been a reduction in the fees.  It used to be £3.50 now it is £3.30 per downloadable document.

I already had that document, that is the one  which says he was trouble as he would not learn to swim. Its his training record, not the ship on which he was when he 'Ran' in NY. Not to worry.

Thanks
