Hi all,
Looking again at the records, I have pinned down three Henry Cartwrights born at the right time in Herefordshire. These are:
1. Thomas Henry Cartwright, bap. August 1835 Leominster, son of John and Mary Ann Leominster. He became a watchmaker. He is listed in 1851 in Leominster with his parents; in 1861 with his wife Elizabeth in Cirencester, in 1871 in St Peter's, Hereford; in 1881 in Horninglow, Staffordshire with wife Elizabeth. Then he turns up again in 1901 in prison, in Princetown, Devon (he is listed as being single, but his profession confirms this is the same as above).
2. Henry Cartwright, bap. April 1834 Leominster, son of Harry and Jane Cartwright.
3. Henry Alexander Cartwright, bap. 1836 Kington, son of Alexander and Elizabeth Cartwright.
The coal miner from Herefordshire who relocated to Wales appears in the 1851 census with the Davies family, accompanied by another lodger called William Cartwright, who is 8. This is consistent with what I have found about Henry Alexander's family, who had a younger brother called Philip William Cartwright (b.1843), who died aged 12 in Pontypool reg. district.
Henry [Alexander] Cartwright then married Martha Gauntlett in 1861 and seemingly died in the late 1870's in the mining disaster mentioned by EstherFawke.
EstherFawke, could you provide further information about this event? If what I say above is correct then Henry and his son Herbert are my distant relatives and the one Jaz was looking for in the first post of the thread
Best wishes,
Cimbrio
