Shortened name in Parish records
« on: Friday 05 November 10 19:41 GMT (UK) »
I've been going through the parish records for Llanpumpsaint where the recorder was very fond of shortening forenames to make entries fit the lines. I can work out most of them except one and that is Jno. I thought there wasn't a J in Welsh so could this be Ianto? Inigo?
Anyone know for sure what it is?

Dear SmithsofPill

Jno = John

For info - no there didn't used to be a J in the Welsh alphabet - but there were still plenty of names like Jane, James, John and the surname Jones for instance.  (the J has now appeared in the Welsh alphabet over the last few years).

Hope this helps a little.
Regards, Alltcafan  :)
