Mrs Mary Thomas
« on: Friday 05 November 10 20:26 GMT (UK) »
I have recently discovered the story of how my 4x great Grandparents Evan Thomas and Mary met and was wondering if anyone could shed any light on it for me.
Evan had been born in 1787 in Aberavon, Glamorgan Wales but as a very young man had left Wales for Ross-on-Wye where he became the Groom to a squire in the town and he and Mary the daughter of this squire fell in love but because of their class differences the two eloped back to Aberavon where they were married and had many children.
If anyone could tell me where I could find any information about the gentry of the town at the time in the early 1800's or maybe has any information about Mary's family I would be very grateful thank you very much.

Kind Regards

Have you tried looking for the marriage certificate then you would know who her fathers was and be able to track the family.  You know this only has a story so you need to confirm the story if Mary's father was the squire or land owner it should state that on the certificate.
cheers cardiff ???

I don't have her marriage certificate but I believe I have found her christening register on Family Search Pilot being Christened in 1792 in Ross, Herefordshire her parents were Thomas Powel and Ann Roberts but she was married on October 6th 1812, in Glamorgan, Wales.

Hello  :)

There was Thomas Powell Symonds of Pengethley Manor, near Ross. He was MP for Hereford early 19th Century, but was unmarried and childless. His nephew inherited the Manor.

You really need to find the details of the marriage at Aberavon to find Mary's maiden name. Freereg has the marriage of Mary Powell and Evan Thomas at Aberavon Parish Church on 6th October 1812

Does anyone have any other information about this? Parish records don't seem to have the father's name on them. Did they have marriage certificates in those days?

Not sure where else to post this but would anyone be able to contact whoever wrote this blog since there's no contact info? They have false information about Mary Powell who married Evan Thomas being Thomas Powell Symonds's niece. They're not the same person http://www.hentlandchurchherefordshire.org/hentland_families_Symonds.html
