Hi,
I am looking for any information on my 3 x great grandmother BETSY SEBIRE,
I think she was born c1801 St Saviour, Jersey, she married GEORGE MARETT
27/4/1823 St Saviour, Jersey.
Any information on the parents of BETSY and the SEBIRE family would be most welcome.
Thank`s.
John.

Hi John

I can conirm that Betsy was indeed baptised in St Saviour Parish Church on 10th Apr 1800, the daughter of Pierre Sebrire and Margaret Mauger. God-parents were Philippe Mourant and Elizabeth Mauger.

Piere and Margaret had 2 further children baptised at St saviour:

Marguerite, 10th Feb 1799, God-parents Charles Sebire and Susanne Sebire.

Pierre, 5th Jul 1801, God-parents Matthieu Le Marquand and Susanne Sebire.

In St Saviour records there are 3 more Sebire bapatisms and 5 marriages between 1645 and 1837.

Pierre Sebire married Marguerite Mauger 8th Mar 1798. There were no other details.

I have not come across this surname before and it is noticable that some of the marriages have the stated alongside them that the Sebire has come from "le passage de St George de Grosellies, Diocese de Bayeux Basse Normandie".

Also, as some Sebire's were resident in St Peter, a quick check of that Parish showed 27 baptisms between 1759 and 1837!

Hi John

As the records that I search are all paper records, I have to transcribe them and then key them up on returning home. I would prefer if you could be specific rather than me just do a blanket transcription.

Hi Stewart,
Do you recall whether Pierre Sebire & Marguerite Mauger had ( la passage de Saint Georges des Groselliers ) against their marriage. If not it could mean that they were from Jersey, so I could look there instead of France.
Also it looks as if Pierre Sebire had relations, Charles Sebire & Susanne Sebire, they could have come from France or maybe Jersey.
Also Elizabeth Mauger, could she have been a sister or relation of Marguerite, and was she from France or Jersey ?
This is the area I need to research.
Best Wishes.
John.

Hi John

There is definitely no comments alongside the record of PS and MM's marriage.

However I can tell you that there is a marriage at St Saviours Parish Church on 30th Sep 1789 between a Charles Sebier de la psse. de St George, Normandie who was resident in St Helier, to Elizabeth Le Sueur, also resident in St Helier.

There is also a marriage on 21st Mar 1801 for a Me. Matthieu Le Marchant and Mse. Susanne Sebier, both living in St Saviour.

Finally, there is a baptism in St Saviour for a Elizabeth Sebier on 12th Oct 1766 and a Margueritte Sebier on 10th Apr 1768. Both quoted the parents as Aaron Sebier and Jeanne Labey.

It mat be relevant that there were a number of generations of the Sebire family in Guernsey.  I have no knowledge of how far back they go.

/Greetings. My name is Christine Engel (Sebire/Dihel/MyerChrist/Handley/Trott/Little/London/Purdon/Strasosky)

For years I've been puzzled as to why I could not find details of my paternal grandfather's, maternal grandfather Charles Evens. Last week I solved the mystery! Charles was also Pierre Sebire born 12th August 1827: St Helier in the Diocese of Winchester in the Island of Jersey.
His father and grandfather were also named Pierre Sebire.
His mother was Francoise Journeaux and grandmother Marguerite Maurger.
He had sister Fanny and twin brother and sister: Charles and Elizabeth. The 1871 Census showed Elizabeth Sebire married Thomas De Faye and had three daughters and three sons, Laura Jane, Lilian Mary and Maud Elise, Louis Thomas, Ernest John, and Phillip Charles four months old.

In 1857 Pierre came to Austgralia as a seaman on board the "Admiral Lyons.' He jumped ship in Sydney to marry Jane McKeown a passenger who travelled with her parents James McKeown and Rachel Haney from Ireland.
In time Pierre adopted the name Charles Evens (sometimes recorded as Evans). He purchased 40 acres of land at Bundabah Port Stephens and established a homestead named  'Eveleigh'. He and Jane were married for 48 years  had 11 children. In 2001 they had 2600 descendants.

Pierre never knew his brother Charles Sebire also jumed ship to stay in  Australia. He settled in Flemington Victoria and built a successful life. He is referred to as "Brighton Charlie" in publication "Memoirs of a Stockman". He also married and had two sons but I have no details beyond knowing there is a street named Sebire in Flemington.

I trust this is of use if not interest to other researchers.
