Hi Seamas and welcome to Rootschat
As you can see I have been four years plus following this line!
My husband's great-great-grandmother was Anne REILLY who married Benjamin JOHNS in 1863
Eliza REILLY married Peter LEIGH in 1868 was your great-grandmother
and from the records I've looked at to date I believe they were sisters
After Anne's death in 1914, one of her sons referred to Eliza as his next of kin.
All my research is based on searches of records as my OH's parents died young
and there was little left in the family home relating to their past,
and very little information had been past on.
You are so fortunate to have items that belonged to these men.
I have some information which I have added to our tree which maybe of interest to you
If you post three times on this site I can send you a private message with my contact details.
Until then:
Your grandparents and their family are on 1911 censusand the missing child at that time was Christina b1905 d1906
Kathleen was born in 1912 I believe
I had not picked up on an Esther after 1911
but I was trying to work back rather than forward to make a link between Eliza and Anne
Anne consistently referred to being born in Co. Dublin
1901 census at 47.1 in Harolds Cross Road (Part) (Rathmines, Dublin)1911 census at 20.1 in Mountainview Avenue (Rathmines & Rathgar West, Dublin)As did Eliza
1901 census at 25 in Kimmage (Rathfarnham, Dublin)
1911 census at 19 in Kimmage (Rathfarnham, Dublin)
This, combined with the fact that when Benjamin JOHNS left the army and returned to Ireland,
they settled in the Harold's Cross area
would lead me to believe that the Reilly family were originally from
the general area of Kimmage/Terenure/Rathfarnham
However when researching common names,
especially those than have several variant spelling it is difficult to prove connections.
Your grandfather's surname is shown on his
baptism in 1876 as LEAKEY
and one of the sponsors is a Brigida REILLY, whom I noted as a possible sister of Eliza and Anne.
Peter LEIGH's baptism in 1880 shows the sponsors were Philip and Bridget BRADY (shown in latin)
A Bridget REILLY of Rathgar m. Philip Brady of Roundtown (Terenure) on July 11 1880
granted this is after the baptism of Peter (January)
but I wondered if the baptism sponsors were written incorrectly at the time.
If this is the case and Bridget is a sister and her marriage record give her mother's name as Julia FitzPATRICK
There is also a Richard REILLY (F) James (M) Julia FitzPATRICK who married a Catherine BYRNE in 1868
Anne named one of her daughters Julia which could indicate a connection between all this information and allow me to "assume" Julia Fitzpatrick was her mother
