Where is "Garrison" County Cavan?
« on: Tuesday 08 November 05 11:46 GMT (UK) »
I have just received a marriage certificate for my great-great-grandfather Philip Gibney who married a Rose Uritt, (I don't know if this was a mispelling of Wright!).  Philip is living at Dungimmon which is correct as I have this on the valuation office records, and Rose was living at a place called Garrison at the time of the marriage, does anybody know anything about a place called Garrison in County Cavan?

I looked on the internet for the surname Uritt and found a D'Uritt, were there many French in this area?

I found a Garrison, in Ballymachugh in County Cavan, would this be it.  I am looking for the name Rose Wright born about 1842?  She didn't marry Philip Gibney until 1864 and so may be on an early census for the area, her father was a James Wright a farmer.  I think Rose may have had a sister called Jane Wright who was a witness on their marriage certificate.

On my ancestors marriage certificate (Rose Wright, Writt or Uritt) she states her residence as Garrison.  I have found a Garrison in Ballymachugh and also in County Fermanagh?  Are they one and the same?

Hi June, No, they are not the same townland.  Ballymachugh in Cavan borders Westmeath,  at the southern end of Cavan, whereas  Garrison in the Parish of Devenish,Fermanagh is north of  County Cavan.  In fact there are quite a few townlands called Garrison.

But if you have her marriage cert. and it says the 'Poor Law Union of Cavan', Ballymachugh is the one.  The Fermanagh 'Garrison' is in the Poor Law Union of Ballyshannon

Thank you so much for clarifying this for me.  I think that Rose came from Ballymachugh which wouldn't be too far from grt-grt-grandfathers place of Dungimmon (sometimes called Dungummin)  in County Caven.
