The next move..
« on: Friday 05 November 10 17:53 GMT (UK) »
Hi    Have recently aquired a wedding cert for my G Uncle and Aunt who wed in Gt Yarmouth 1929.  Walter Drake and Isabella Price. This now gives me an address of what looks like Temperance Hostel (could be Hotel but dont think so) south Howard Street Gt Yarmouth and  the grooms fathers name of James Drake general dealer.
Question is : How do we find people once the Census is out of play please?  Obviously I'd like to track the grooms birth and family line.  Many thanks :-*

Start with what you know and work back from it

How old was Walter on the marriage cert - use that info to find a birth on freebmd

Use the 1911 census if he was born before then to find him possibly with his parents

If he is with his parents in 1911 - use the info re: number of years married to find his parents marriage - and so forth and so on

Put this birth on the backburner whilst you investigate the 1911 census.

Will do, thank you both.  just one last question.  Ancestry dosent seem to have the 1911 census on display yet, so which is best route to it ? :-\

The 1911 is strictly pay per view so you either have to buy a 1911 subscription or credits.  It is only available via the following website or FindMyPast subscription

You may find the following helpful when searching the free index

USING THE FREE 1911 INDEX TO DETERMINE THE CORRECT HOUSEHOLD

http://www.1911census.co.uk/search/tnaform.aspx

Once you find a possible match - make a note of the county and district in which the person was living

Return to the index and in PERSONAL DETAILS - just put the surname of the family - nothing else

In LOCATION - Select the county and below it - type in the district

In OTHER MEMBERS OF THE HOUSEHOLD - show the full name of the person you have found on the index

Click SEARCH

You will have to buy credits to view the full entry - the above instructions will only help to possibly show others of the same name in the same household

Is Delia his wife?  If so - how many years are they shown as being married?  Is there a marriage for them on freebmd

How old was Walter on the marriage cert - does his age tie in with the 1911 entry?

I'm being cautious because there is a 1906 birth on freebmd in Aylsham - Walter Ernest and 2 others 1908 and 1909 in Norwich & Mitford

Walter Ernest died 1969 - Norwich
Walter 1908 died 1989 Norwich

Do you know Walter's date and place of death/burial?  From the latter 1960s dates and places of birth were noted on death certificates (or as good as known by the person who registered the death).  Also, gravestones and local newspaper obituaries can be useful.
