End of line for TURNBULL in Durham?
« on: Wednesday 17 November 10 14:44 GMT (UK) »
Can it be true that of all these Turnbull brothers in Durham not one had a family?

The eight Turnbull brothers born to Thomas and Sarah are
John 1771
Ralph 1776
Thomas 1777
George 1780
Luke 1781
Robert 1783
Thomas 1787
Robert 1792
all born at Chester le Street

Of those 8 only Luke sems to have married!

Many thanks for any children you can find

With the common last name Turnbull and such common first names-John Ralph, Thomas, George, and William, I am not sure how you would know if they were family or not.  There are at least two Turnbulls that were born in the 1770's in Chester le Street  in the 1851 census.  Getting much farther than that - they are in their 70-80's in 1851.

There is a George Turnbull born about 1781  Chester le Street HO107/2394 folio 225 page 2, with a wife Mary and two sons - John age 30 and Robert age 29.

There is a John Turnbull, widower, born about 1772, Chester le Street with his daughter Bridget Robson (widow) and her children  HO107/2394 folio 538 page 34.

The problem is that they would have been married before 1800 most likely, parent's names were not mentioned in the marriages and those grandchildren may have married before 1837--again parents not mentioned.  Only Luke who has a more unusual name.

Hi Esdel,

Thankyou, this is most interesting. Whoever would have thought someone could make sense of all these Turnbulls? That must have taken an enormous amount of time!

OK, well, I think I can lay claim to Thomas b. 1781 chr. 2 Sep 1781 CLS. Thomas had at least one Daughter – Mary Ann Turnbull.

Mary Ann Turnbull b. circa 1811 Birtley, Durham County UK, d. March 1885 Sandhurst, Victoria Australia. bur. Bendigo cemetery 28 March 1885.
She married Jonathan COOK, April 16 1831, Ref: Penshaw Register.
Jonathan COOK was born circa 1810–13 New Lambton, (near Houghton Le Spring) Durham County d. 8 December 1875 Sandhurst VIC Australia, bur. 10 December, Bendigo Cemetery. Father Jonathan COOK.

Interesting that there are other siblings of Thomas Turnbull ie. Mary b. 1784; and  George b 1789.

Possibly George who married Anne Henderson are the parents, based on the dates for marriage ie. 1764, as the other one (Ann Sanders) is earlier again. So frustrating not to know for sure.

Forgive my ignorance, are these details from IGI?

Cheers,

Thanks Esdel,

Funny, I do have a Zachariah in another branch of the family.

Yes Turnbull, Cook etc, common as Smith, Brown and Jones at this point in history. Still, the name Turnbull has come down through the Cook family until relatively recently (well, late last century).  There was obviously some reference which made them keep it?

I'll certainly keep you in the loop. The COOKs were all miners, as were I suspect the Turnbulls. We were quite lucky with the Cooks, there are generations of them all baptised/buried at St Michaels HLS, so it was very easy to track them.  I managed to trace many using the IGI Pilot Search Durham Bishop's Transcripts, which I have since realised has been taken down from the web.  It was a fantastic resource, original scans of the transcripts all freely available.

Cheers, and thankyou again for these new names, very exciting.

Hello again,
Just wondering if you have this one? We seem to think that this George and Ann may be a better fit in regard to birth year for Thomas ie. 1781.

George Turnbull b. C1751 d. 20 Jan 1810 Wilson's Row,
Houghton LS buried 22 Jan 1810 HLS.
Married Ann Morrison 24 Jul 1779 HLS.

Apparently there is also a burial for Mary Turnbull 13 Jul 1772 Chester LS residing Birtley.

Cheers,
