Hello again,
Just wondering if you have this one? We seem to think that this George and Ann may be a better fit in regard to birth year for Thomas ie. 1781.

George Turnbull b. C1751 d. 20 Jan 1810 Wilson's Row,
Houghton LS buried 22 Jan 1810 HLS.
Married Ann Morrison 24 Jul 1779 HLS.

Apparently there is also a burial for Mary Turnbull 13 Jul 1772 Chester LS residing Birtley.

Cheers,

Well I do have about 60 George Turnbull.
But no Ann Marrison - only a Mary Morrison who married Edward Turnbull in 1812 and a John Poole Morrison b 1899

The parents of
Thomas Turnbull b1781 who married Sarah Dickinson
George Turnbull b 1789 Chester le Street
Mary Turnbull b 1784
according to me are George Turnbull and Ann (unknown nee)

None of my many Mary Turnbull know when they died or where buried.

Is is Houghton le Spring yet Chester le Street? Bit confusing, eh?

Hello again,

Back to my original predicament, – too many Turnbulls.

Chester le Street and Houghton le Spring are Parishes next to each other on the map.  I have a good copy of one if you'd like me to send it to you? The Turnbull family seem to have been living in'around both locations. I assume it was to do with where they found work as miners? I think they (HLS and CLS) are Parishes, within the county of Durham?

Have you ever heard of Whelplitch, Chester le Street?  I can't seem to find it anywhere.  Of course many of these places have since disappeared due to mining activities etc.

Cheers,

Yes, both are parishes in County Durham
Durham is the biggest town in County Durham

Sorry, never heard of Whelplitch - until you mentioned it.
I tried Ancient Whelplitch (which often works) but nothing.
Maybe it is just terrible handwriting on some document!

There was a thread on this very topic earlier this year. As a place-name it definitely turns up from time to time in the Chester le Street parish records, but no-one seems to be able to work out exactly where it was.

Yes they are - you can see locations, adjoining parishes and much other useful information about them on the Durham Record Office place-name index. http://nd.durham.gov.uk/recordoffice/dro.nsf/vwebplaces

I doubt it. Chester le Street - three miles south on the side of the old A1 at Plawsworth lived the late Father of John Turnbull - Alistair Turnbull. John Turnbull is with Youngs at Hexham. Alistairs Father was briefly in partnership with my Grandfather until his untimely passing in 1924. Turnbull Parkinson and Nicholson was an amalgamation of Auction Marts around Durham. Indeed Grandfather met his match in the form of a furniture removal lorry at the crossing of the A1 at Pity Me, - not quite equal when 'tilting' with a motor bike. He was on his way from Durham Auction to one of his own - either Lanchester or Tow Law. Suggest contact John Turnbull, who shouldn't take much finding. Alistairs father must have been born around 1900.
