This is a bit of a long shot seeing as your Learoyd research has been in earlier centuries.  Do you have any information about the more recent Percy A. Learoyd son of James and Elizabeth born in Huddersfield in 1849?

Hi singingsusie,
Here is the information I have on Percy.

Full name - Percy Augustus Learoyd

b. 1849 Huddersfield
baptised 18 October 1850 - St Peters Church Huddersfield
m. Mary Stuart Mitchell  15 Aug 1859 - Park Church Glasgow
d. 27 March 1924 - Henley on Thames

Percy on his marriage certificate stated his occupation as a Shipowner.

I don't know if Percy and Mary had any children.

There are a couple of mentions for Percy in the London Gazette one on 18 Feb 1876 dissolving a Cotton Spinners and Doubling business called Williamson and Learoyd in Huddersfield and one on 30 August 1878 dissolving a partnership involving a Shipowners and Brokers in London.

That is about all I have.

Hope it helps!

Kate

Hello Kate,
Many thanks for the information about Percy Augustus Learoyd, it certainly does help.  I was particularly interested in his businesses in Huddersfield and how they linked to where he lived.  I have read in the local press that he was very supportive of those playing Rugby League, and allowed them to hold practice games in the grounds of his home or works (not sure which).  I have not found any children from the marriage, but noticed that on the 1871 census he was lodging at The George Hotel - recognised as the birthplace of Rugby League.  I found the Williamson and Learoyd business listed in a Huddersfield trade directory, but it appeared to be quite short lived.  Do you know how many of the family homes were called "The Grove," and do you know if there are any images/portraits of him available on the internet?  Two books are currently being written as part of the Rugby Heritage Project, and as Percy was very influential, he deserves a mention.  Kind regards
Singing Susie

The only home known as The Grove was the family home, I haven't come across any others so far.

I also haven't come across any photographs as yet of Percy.

The books sound fascinating, I noticed he was involved in a lot of sport in Huddersfield but never thought anything of it, just thought he enjoyed sport!

Best Wishes

I did follow up both items from the press, so thanks for that.  Percy is proving a challenge to research.  He did a lot of good, but successfully kept a low profile. I am at a bit of a loss on what I can follow up, apart from him being a ship owner.  Kind regards  SS

This is unconfirmed which is why I hadn't mentioned it but it might be of use.

There is a possibility he was a Mason. I know for definite that his father James and his brothers Tom and Joe were members of The Lodge of Truth No. 521 in Huddersfield. However, in the document I have there is no mention of Percy,  but it doesn't include a list of members.

I found a copy of his probate record, he was living at 5, Caxton Terrace in Henley on Thames, he left £6104 13s 6d.

Incidentally his wife who died in the February 1924 left nearly £100,000  :o She was living at Queen Anne's Mansions, St James Park Middlesex.

I wish I could be of more help!

Best Wishes
Kate

How very strange about the Masonic link.  I have recently looked at a local RL player and looked at this particular Masonic Lodge, having found menus in with the archive material at the WYAS(Kirklees).  I seem to recall i found an online list of (historic) members of that particular Lodge.  In terms of the other information I think I have followed a similar route to yours.  Did they keep two homes, or did they live separate lives?  The individuals listed in their probate, seem successful and high profile - neighbours possibly?   Quite different to my woollen weavers etc.  A fascinating view on another world.  Thanks again for your help. There was a large Learoyds Mill on Leeds Road, Huddersfield.  Further on the road is Bradley.  Would your relatives have been connected to the Mill.  The building is now used by a tile company, but I'm sure it would not be difficult to get some information about Learoyds Mill.

regards
Quigs

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth
