Surname of - FELL. Cumberland.
« on: Thursday 25 November 10 12:41 GMT (UK) »
Does this surname belong originally to the Cumbria area ?  I am looking for a Richard Fell, born possibly between 1895(at the earliest) and 1900.  Richard Fell served in the Army during WWI, and at some stage settled in Newcastle-on-Tyne, where he married a Helen KNOX, who was born and bred in Newcastle.  He died in 1930 in London, and his widow and 3 year old son remained in Newcastle.
It is thought that Richard was from Cumberland.   One I found several months back was a Richard Fell, born 1895, in the Brampton District.  He was aged 16 in the 1911 census.  I am searching for his 83 year old son, and unfortunately these are the bare facts I have at this time.

Does this surname belong originally to the Cumbria area ?

I don't know about "originally" but FreeBMD shows several FELLs born in Cumberland every year from 1838 onwards.

Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

If the death reg 1928 Pancras is correct -then that would give a birth year of approx 1885

There is a birth reg for Richard fell Dec qtr 1895 Wigton Cumbria Cumberland -but it seems this one died Dec qtr 1895 Wigton

there is on 1901 census Richard Fell b Carlisle age 6 - living with Grandparents and Jane , his widowed mother.

There is a birth reg 1894 Carlisle

I saw that one - Jane's husband (James, 29) died just before 1891 census but Richard happened somehow ;)

 suzard,
Thanks for that post re Fell.  You have come up with the apparently correct details. One stumbling block was that I searched under Helen, and the correct name was Ellen.  Ellen Knox's father originated from Edinburgh, where he was an upholsterer.  I have spoken to Mr. Fell(who is now 83 yrs) and I cannot thank you enough on his behalf.  As regards the post after yours, perhaps I had better start some more digging before I disclose any further facts re Jane's husband dying prior to the arrival of Richard.

I have got a bit further with this having followed up the information given in the posts to my original query.
From the 1881 Census for Cockermouth, an address relevant to my search was : 165 Thirkgate,BobbinMill.  Does anyone know if Thirkgate still exists ?  James D. Fell listed there was shown as a Bobbin Turner, b. at Cartmel, Lancs(?)  Surely Cartmel has always been within the county of Cumberland.
The 1901 Census relates to 25, Bruce Road, Upperby, in Eskdale or North Cumberland. Does that address still exist ?

Cartmel was in Lancs until the formation of Cumbria in 1974 - it was never in Cumberland http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/Cartmel/

Thirkgate = Kirkgate? http://tinyurl.com/3yp3a72
