Noticed this when looking up the farm. My wife lived at Scaffold Hill and adjoining Scaffold Mill farm when young. Her mum was one of the cooks at the Hospital.

Thanks Stan, that must mean it had been built specially to hold mass meetings for the pitmen ?

Steve

I don't think so  :) there were quarries at Scaffold Hill and this is probably what they mean by by an amphitheatrically constructed place

You can see the quarry on the 1898 map at http://maps.nls.uk/view/101027484#zoom=4&lat=1508&lon=4295&layers=BT

Thank you for this Stan.

I haven't searched in depth for further series on the nls for the North of England. You have
prompted me to look further and this morning I have been looking at Wallsend, and, also the
whereabouts of the Wallsend Colliery where 2 young lads in my ancestry died in the Pit disaster
in 1835.

What a find, made my day.

By the by ......

I have found a Killingworth Racecourse that was at Scaffold Hill.

See: twsitelines.inf and search on HER Number 7761

During all this I have discovered that one of that lads who died in the Pit disaster (11yrs old) had
covered for another boy after his shift. The latter had wanted to go to the horse-racing it being
Thursday and Gold Cup day.

Presumably quarrying followed on from the horse-racing.
