V2 death in Dartford ? 16 March 1945
« on: Tuesday 30 November 10 10:50 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find more details about Arthur Frederick Atfield, who apparently died on on 16/3/1945 in Dartford. The cause of his death is given as 'due to war operations'.

Does anybody know of a bomb attack on Dartford on this date, please?

There was, I believe, a V2 strike at Sutton-at-Hone only two days earlier but this particular person died at Morland Avenue in Dartford, so that does not quite add up.

Any suggestions on what may have caused this fatality, or ideas on how to uncover the details, would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Alan

Hi Alan

Have you looked at the Dartford cemeteries at http://www.cwgc.org to see if anybody else died in the area on that date?  Might he have been injured previously not necessarily on the day he died?  Was 6 Moreland Avenue his home address?

Local newspapers might be useful ie. coroner's inquest or obituary (try Dartford library) http://www.kent.gov.uk/librariespublicui/OpeningTimes/LibraryDetails.aspx?id=14 - they may well have a publication or two covering events/local casualties during WW2 (many towns have)

Do you know where he was buried ie. any monumental inscription?

Thanks for all the suggestions and hints; I'm very grateful.

I will follow up those ideas.

I have checked back on the information that was passed on to me, and 'yes' the address was actually number 6 Morland Avenue. That is very intriguing! Is that house therefore of some significance?

Best wishes,
Alan

Do any folks in the Dartford area remember the air raids and the dog fights with the German aircraft and our boys? I lived on Morland Avenue near Vickers Armstrong which I might add produced ammunitions. We were hit with a V1 in 1945, killling four of our neighbours. We sure were lucky. I lived at No 7, lucky huh. I have lived in Canada for the last 45 years. I would love to hear from anyone who knew me or anyone in my family. All the best, Clive Jeffrey "
