76th regiment India Benson

hi to all
I have a number of questions
firstly my grt grt grandmother  elizabeth benson
nee daniels              was born in India madras
have found her on 1881 census where it states
she is a british subject what does this mean
She maried my gt gt grandfather thomas benson b1842 macclesfield
in bellary india on 25th january 1867 london mission chapel bellary
 he was a private in the 76th regiment
any ideas on where the regt came from I suspect it may be a cheshire regt
also the marriage certificate states that thomas bensons father as his
his stepfather John welham Im a bit cofused by this as I believed his father to be william benson and I just wondered why he chose to put his stepfathers name on the cert maybe william had died mmm and finally elizabeths father
is listed as a peter daniels but I am unable to find a birth for elizabeth
or marriage or info on peter ...help please

If William Benson died when Thomas was little and his mother married John Welham it might have been quite natural for him to give John's name when asked about his father.

Was the occupation of Peter given on Elizabeth and Thomas' marriage certificate?

as for william benson dying when thomas was young
I suppose it is a possibility Im unable to confirm
williams death at present as there are so many
william bensons I think the way forward is a look up or a copy of thomas birth certificate thomas born 1842
frustratingly I have marriage certificate and death certificate dated 1913
siddington cheshire the informant of the death is a john whittaker
stepson  so it would appear thomas also married twice
the plot thickens

hi,,his army service record is available on the findmypast website.   it does not contain any family info though. it is the thomas benson with no year of birth shown ,,,43rd foot,,,,,he later transferred to the 76th.
