Quaker burial grounds??
« on: Friday 10 December 10 04:44 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I was wondering if there are any transcripts available for the Quaker burial ground inside the Linthorpe Cemetery, Middlesborough?

Also, if your family were Quakers and lived in the Bedale/Exelby/Burneston area in the 1700s - 1800s, where would they be buried?

Thanks,
RK

May I suggest the if you are not already familiar with the site that you take a look at the web site www.gravestonephotos.com  This website is a wonderful resource containing photographs of headstones which if you are lucky and find a photograph of one of your ancestors headstones you can request a copy of the photograph to be sent to you via e mail free of charge.

There are 83 graves recorded for Linthorpe Quaker Municipal.

Hi CJL,

Yes, I am familiar with that excellent site.  That is how I found 2 of my relatives' gravestones in the Quaker burial ground at Linthorpe.    I now wonder if the 83 graves recorded on the gravestone photo site are ALL of the graves in this burial ground.  I would think that there would be more, given the age of the burial ground.  So, I am curious if there is a transcript of all the Quaker burials in this cemetery.

I also wondered about Quakers in the Bedale area, as that is where many of my Quaker ancestors lived.  Would they have been buried at Linthorpe, or is there a Quaker burial ground closer to this area?

Researching Quaker ancestors is turning out to be quite a challenge, as they don't usually appear on BMD lists.   I hope to find out more from cemetery transcriptions.

Thanks,
RK

RK,

I thought it was worth posting the details just in case you had not come across the web site.

I am sure that you will have also come across this source, but again just in case you haven't.    have you tried www.interment.net  They have a list of burials for Linthorpe although it does state that it is not complete 1,213 entries out of approx 50,000 graves.  A possible long shot, but it might be worth a try.

Good Luck

Thanks for the suggestion.

I hadn't tried the interment.net site.  I just had a look at it and it doesn't list my ancestors who are in the Quaker burial ground.  It was certainly worth a look though.

I have many relatives from this area who were not Quakers and I will be certain to check the Linthorpe listings on the interment site for their names.

RK,

It was worth a try.  Hopefully someone else with more local knowledge of the area than me will see your message and be able to advise you whether a transcript exists.

Have you searched for a local family history society, they might be the best place to start looking for a transcript.

Thanks CJL,

I will look into that.  Perhaps they would have some information about Quakers in that area.

I have a gaping hole in my family tree - where my Quaker ancestors are supposed to go.  None of my usual sources of information are proving to be helpful.   Oh well - I suppose if family history research was easy, it wouldn't be as much fun!

RK,

Just another thought, have you taken a look at www.bmdregisters.co.uk  apparently RG6 contains records relating to the Society of Friends (Quakers) Registers, Notes and Certificates of Birth, Marriages and Burials ranging from 1578 - 1841  from what I can quickly see, you can search RG6 by surname but if you want to view the full details it appears to be a pay per view site.

Might be worth a surname search.

Thanks so much CJL,

I didn't know about this resource.  A quick search by last name (Halliday) is turning up all sorts of RG6 registry entries.   Wow - this is great!

Thanks again,
