'Ampthill Street' Toddington?
« on: Tuesday 14 December 10 11:26 GMT (UK) »
Hi
While researching my family in Toddington i came across the 1851 census which clearly shows some of my ancestors living at  ' 4 Ampthill Street '....... after some quite extensive searching i can't seem to find any reference other than the one on the census about Ampthill Street in Toddington!!!!!...Does anyone know where it was?....because being born and bred there i know that there is no such place now!!!

Hello China

I would imagine Ampthill Street is perhaps now called Station Road, Toddington. Today this is the A5120 the main road to Ampthill via Harlington.

Hi Alan

I checked that one out....as i thought like you it would be the obvious candidate...but... Station Road as we now know it used to be called ' Tanners End ' and further outside the village it was called ' Harlington Road '...I have census returns for both of these!!!

cheers

Interesting that you have found that Station Road used to be known as Tanners End.

If you take the residents of Ampthill Street in the 1851 census, a number of which were Farmers owning their own land, and look for them in the 1861 census you will see that in certain instances their address is then listed as Tanners End

To me it is increasingly likely that between 1851 & 1861 part of Ampthill Street was renamed Tanners End

Thats ok China

Another place to search is BLARS (Bedfordshire & Luton Archives & Records Service )

If you go to their web site @

http://blars.adlibsoft.com/form.html

and in PLACES SEARCH enter Ampthill Street it lists it as Ampthill Street, Toddington/Harlington Road Toddington/ Station Road Toddington/Wadlow Highway, Toddington.

Hello

I am certain Ampthill Street became Tanners End, as my ancestors (Fowlers) were living at 10 Ampthill Street in 1851 and then 10 Tanners End in 1861.
