Mustard / Ogilvy
« on: Wednesday 15 December 10 00:56 GMT (UK) »
Hello  :)

I have found the Baptism record for my 5x Great Grandmother Elizabeth Ogilvy on 11 February 1760 in Clunie, it reads - "Ronald Ogilvy in Milltown of Cluny had a child in fornication with Margaret Murray baptized Elizabeth". Does this mean that Elizabeth was Illegitimate? This would make sense as i can't find a Marriage for Ronald & Margaret nor any other children from that union.

Elizabeth Married James Mustard though i cannot find their Marriage. James, their son, was born 1 August 1779 in Methven, Perth and died 15 June 1867 in Inveresk, Mid Lothian. James Mustard was born around 1754 in Perthshire. Unfortunately i can't find any other children to James & Elizabeth/another Marriage for either Ronald or Margaret/the parents of James Mustard who Married Elizabeth.

James Mustard 1779 married Anna Crichton on 30 October 1803 in Clunie, but what i find strange is that they dont have their first child until 1810, and no others can i find before that time. their children -

Robert Graham Mustard 1810 - 1819
Thomas Graham Mustard 1812 - 1881 (i dont think he ever Married)
James Mustard 1814 - ? (Cannot find Marriage or Death - Would appreciate any help with this)
William Mustard 1817 - 1860
Isabella Graham Mustard 1820 - 1907.

I have no idea where the Graham Name comes from as i cant find it on either the Mustard or Crichton side. I've also been wondering just how common a name Mustard is in not only Perthshire but in Scotland as a whole - it doesn't sound very Scottish to me. Any help with its origins?

If anyone could help me with anything i would really be grateful!

Thankyou

hi keelan
the surname database has some suggestions about the origins of the surname
http://www.surnamedb.com/Surname/Mustard

it may be that james mustard and anna crichton just had difficulty conceiving or even more likely that they had children who died in infancy who were perhaps never registered for birth or death.

concerning their child James There is a matching death on scotlands people for a james mustard born arond 1817 died in 1879 aged 66 in Tulliullan in Fife.  Not sure if you have already discounted this one.

There are 2 marriages in the stat regs for a james mustard as well, although he may well have married pre-1855 given his age, and there are 8 marriages for a james mustard between 1832 and 1837 in the OPR, 2 of those are in Tulliullan so more likely to be the match for the death above.

There are 224 matches for mustards in the 1841 census, so its not too uncommon but probably unusual enough in certain areas to make research a bit easier!  Certainly easier than my macintyre and macinnes searches!

hope that helps a bit, I will look again at your other earlier questions.

Hi Aileen,
I wonder if we are searching for the same family: MacIntyre/MacInnes, Ballachulish, Lismore, Argyllshire?

Hi Collette,

Welcome to RootsChat.

I am very sorry but you have replied to a member we have sadly lost contact with at the moment. (there is a little note underneath his profile name)

Lost members do sometimes come back and your reply would be here when he does (fingers crossed)

Regards

Sarah :)
