Bere Regis Dorset/Kane Croft
« on: Saturday 18 December 10 15:25 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I wonder if anyone out there has or knows any history surrounding this village. I had an ancester living here on the 1901 census. Kane Croft and Wife Henrietta
Living The Kennels, He is down as a Huntsman/groom  (this is his occupation on most census records. I seem to have lost him since 1901 cant find him anywhere
but was interested to know if anyone would know perhaps who he may have worked for. I beleive this area is quite small so would think possibly not many people who would employ a Huntsman. My kane was born 1855Arthingworth Northamptonshire although 1901 census has him as 1859.

Many thanks
Mary
Iam Researching the names Craft/Croft, Garnett in the Northamptonshire Area ie Braybrooke, Arthingworth and surrounding. also Bastin East Woodhay Berks or Hamps not sure which is correct

Hi Mary,

The Bere Regis page on the Dorset OPC site has a link to the Bere Regis Village website, which has some history of the village.

Thank you Nanny Jan
I have had a look at this site but could not find anything. I was hoping someone may have researched the area and new of any large houses or farms that would have employed a number of people in the late 1800's eary 1900's

Thanks Again
I appreciate your reply

Regards
and a very Merry Xmas to you and your family

Hi,

The kennels might have been connected to the local hunt.   Perhaps an email to the Bere Regis village website might yield some answers.     :-\

Merry Christmas Mary from a snowy Dorset.  Hope you can find some more details; the village website has a great variety of information.

The 1901 census has The Kennels listed immediately after Bere Down Farm and shortly after Roke Farm. On a modern map, all three are just North of Bere Regis, but look separate.

One of the other families at The Kennels in 1901 is mentioned on the village site:
http://www.bereregis.org/St.JohnWar.htm

There is still a house named Huntsmans House at The Kennels today. There is an email address here (looks like a hen breeder), so might be worth sending a message:

All the families I am researching are listed on the main page here:
