Wellington - direcotry 1922
« on: Sunday 19 December 10 11:08 GMT (UK) »
My ancestor died at 1 George Street Wellington in February 1922.

This was not her address so I wonder what she was doing there and who lived there then.

I have checked 1911 census and an elderely couple were living there who were not connected to the family.
I wondered if it was a nursing home but it is not big enough.
Maybe it was relation - or a nurse?

Does anyone have access to a directory that would give information about who was living there at the time?

Thanks

Hi Lizb

Had the chance to pop into Wellington Museum this morning as they are now back open from closing over the winter period.
They have a large collection of town directories so here is what I have found out in case you have not answered your question in the meantime:

1 George Street, Wellington - Miss Margaret Bishop - listed as resident there in the following years 1915 through to 1922.
1923 she is not listed anywhere which would seem to be correct as you say she died in Feb 1922.

Looked in earlier directories for this lady and found her living in Mantle Street:
1912 at 88 Mantle Street
1913 & 1914 at 54 Mantle Street

All of these addresses are terraced houses.

Let me know if I can look up anything else for you.

Research areas:
mainly Devon and Somerset
but also South Wales, Sussex, Sheffield, Northern Ireland, Fifeshire

Names:
Marshall & Goldsworthy; Bass & Nicol; Worden & Hobbs; Noble & Haste
Woodberry & Chorley; Moon & Hart; Brice & Richards; Denham & Honeybun

Thank you so much. This is very useful. My ancestor was Sarah bishop who was margarets mother. Sarah died in 1922. I have been trying to trace what happened to Margaret. I think she moved to live with one of her married brothers after her mother died. So this all ties up.

Hello Liz,
I haven't done this before but saw your posts regarding Charles Bishop, he was my husband's grandfather.  I've done a lot of research on Ancestry but can at least fill you in about his family and why he died at Essondale.  After coming from Alberta the family settled in Victoria, Charlie had a debilitating stroke and finally the doctor suggested that he be sent to Essondale for treatments and that is where he died.
He was born in Wellington Nov. 15 1881 but his father moved the family to Darlington by the 1891 census.

He married May Hilda Wilson in York, Ontario, Canada June 17, 1912  She was born in Surrey, England in 1887 and died in Victoria March 11, 1961

Their children were:
Charles Horace born 1913 and died in Murrayville, BC 1994
Dorothy May born Jan 8 1916 and died in Victoria Oct. 4 2015 she married Gilbert John Margison
Ernest Linton born 1918 and died in Saskatoon 1984
George Dennis born in 1920 and died in Victoria 1985
Philip Eugene (my husband's dad) born 1921 and died in Prince George, BC 1971
Joyce Agnes born in 1924 and died in North Vancouver in 2012 she was married to Gerald Miller Newman

I can give you more info but better send this in hopes that I've got to the correct place.

Another Liz.
