British cemetery in Aden
« on: Tuesday 21 December 10 14:45 GMT (UK) »
Hi, am wondering if anyone knows anything about the British cemetery in Aden? I've tried Google and even the Seamen's Mission as suggested by a Roots Chatter, but have hit a brick wall. There's a possibility that my Grandfather is buried there, having died while his ship was in the port.

Many Thanks

Hi Meggy1

Do you have a date for your Grandfathers Death, because Silent
Valley cemetery was built in 1965 if that is any help. See

            http://www.onstuis.co.uk/little.html

There is also a British cemetery in a built up area of Aden
at Hafoon Maallia. See

            http://wikimapia.org/4081931/British-Cemetery

From the map, it seems to be close to the Gulf.

It might be possible to locate him by name via British
deaths abroad records.

Hi, Thanks to both of you for the information. He died in 1950 so obviously not in Silent Valley. Will try the British deaths abroad records and also the records for Merchant Seamen in Kew. However, he's proving very difficult to find!

I've managed to find where the shipping line archives are, so will try that too.

Thanks again for your interest!

It may be that the enclosed area with the white wall was the British bit ...

Sadly, the combined military/civilian cemetery in Maalia (we called it Maalla back in 67) was very badly trashed by extremists some weeks ago.

Last time I was in Silent Valley Cemetery it was in pristine condition and very well attended by a dedicated CWGC staff.
