Winfred (Winifred) McNally
« on: Friday 24 December 10 10:37 GMT (UK) »
Looking for information on a Winfred (Winifred) McNally, born in 1882, Kilmore Lower, Newtownforbes, County Longford, Ireland.Parents were James  b.1841 and Ann McNally. Her siblings include Thomas(1878), Mary Kate (1880), James (1886), Ann (1888) and Patrick (1890). Family lost contact but she was listed on the 1901 census. They think she may have moved to UK or USA. William Barden (Kilmore Upper) and Winfred McNally may have sponsored a James Donegan b. 2 Jan 1894. Any info regarding her would be appreciated.

welcome to Rootschat. Here's the link to family in 1901 census in case anyone else wants to see it-

... she may have moved to UK or USA. William Barden (Kilmore Upper) and Winfred McNally may have sponsored a James Donegan b. 2 Jan 1894.
Could you explain this bit- sponsered James Donegan where/for what purpose?

I think 'sponsoring' means in the financial sense - it would be for immigration purposes that if a person cannot provide for themselves, then  a 'sponsor ' would be responsible for them.

Yes, but if someone (in this case James Donegan) was wanting to go to another country (say U.S. or Canada- Ireland was part of the U.K. so no need for official help) then I'd think the sponsor would have already been in U.s. or Canada.
Have you checked for James Donegan in other sources to see if you can find where he went?

I'm just starting my search. Have tried donegan on the 1901 and 1911 census. Also have tried barden on same. There is no record on ellis island passenger lists for Winfred either. So where else should I try?

Could this be 'your' William Barden in 1911 census? (born Co.Longford)-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Armagh/Armagh_North_Urban/Railway_Street/324130

Can't see any record of Winifred McNally leaving U.K. between 1901-1920.

Since Winifred went 'missing' sometime after 1901 these are the choices-
1) she's still in Ireland
     a) in the census but mis-transcribed
     b) in an institution listed by initials
     c) married between 1901/1911 so under another surname
2) she died between 1901/1911
3) she moved to England, Scotland or Wales

Ok many thanks. Will try work on all those  options. I got the information on the 'sponsor' thing from another guy, but I now think it means she and William Barden sponsored James at baptisim. Also he had spelled Dennigan as Donegan. Have traced the Dennigan's to Kilmore Lower, so they were neighbours.
Will get cracking. Thanks.
