Davies family from Oakbank Kirknewton
« on: Sunday 26 December 10 20:45 GMT (UK) »
Just seeing if I can find any more info on my Davies ancestors who came from Oakbank in Kirknewton. Father was Elijah Davies born 1853 in Kidderminster, Worcestershire. Mother was Elizabeth Bell Mowbray born 1857 Colinton, Edinburgh. Elijah died on 8th Feb 1908 at Distillery Row, Haggs, Stirlingshire. Elizabeth died on 10th Sept 1905 at Oakbank, Kirknewton. Elijah and Elizabeth were married in Lincoln on 13th Aug 1876.

Some of the details of the children are a bit sketchy as in dates of marriage or death dates.

The children were as follows:-

James Daniel Davies born 1876 Lincoln. He married Annie Tinley on 28th July 1898 in the Sheriff Court House, Saint Giles, Edinburgh.

Elizabeth Bell Davies. Born about 1878 Midcalder. She was adopted and ran the grocery/confectionery shop in Broxburn during the 1960's and 1970's owned by her brother.

Elijah Davies. Born 26th June 1880 Kirknewton. Occupation was an Apprentice Cooper. He married a Marion Darling.

Maria Davies Born 1883 Oakbank, Kirknewton. Maria died on 13th Sept 1888 in Oakbank, Kirknewton aged five.

William Mowbray Davies born about 1885 Kirknewton. Occupation was an Apprentice Wagon Builder.

Maria Davies born about 1890 Oakbank, Kirknewton. Occupation was an Domestic Servant. Maria married James Welsh on 16th Aug 1909 at 20 Henderson Row, Edinburgh. Maria died on 5th June 1952 at 11 Gibson Terrace, Edinburgh.

Henry Davies born 26th December 1891 Oakbank, Kirknewton. Henry married Edith Wilkie in 1915 at Haggs Manse Church, Stirlingshire. Henry died on 18th February 1947 at Castleview Terrace, Haggs, Stirlingshire.

John Davies born 13th March 1894 Oakbank, Kirknewton.
John went round the markets including the Barrowlands in Glasgow. He was selling medicines on his stall. It was possibly herbal remedies. He was wanting to diet and he took a type of slimming pill which ended up killing him.

Frederick Willetts Davies born 24th Nov 1896 Oakbank, Kirknewton. Frederick married Mary Purves on 23rd Feb 1921 at Livingston Street, Addiewell, West Calder. Frederick died on 21st October 1968 in Broxburn.Mary Purves was born Livingston in 1899. She was known as Minnie and her occupation was a Surgical Nurse.

So if anyone can add anything onto the details that I already have, it would be appreciated. As i'm struggling to find anything else about them at the moment.

Yours

You have so much info already, not sure what you don't have  ;)

Have you come across this info already:

From 1929 until 1968, Frederick Davies ran a Fruit and Confectionery store in Main Street, Broxburn. By 1971, the shop had became the Edinburgh Savings Bank. In 1936, he opened up another shop in Greendykes Road, Broxburn. By 1965, the Greendykes Road shop was being ran by his Son, Frederick Davies Junior. Frederick Junior was still running this shop by 1975.

Elizabeth Bell Davies. Born about 1878 Midcalder. She was adopted and ran the grocery/confectionery shop in Broxburn during the 1960's and 1970's owned by her brother.

Hello,

www.deceasedonline.com

There is a cremation for James Daniel Davies on this site. After choosing Scotland, choose Edinburgh. Didn't try to find the others you have listed. You may find others here too.

Hi

The Scotland's People newsletter of June 1913 ( to locate go to search site and put newsletter in search box) has an interesting piece about Oakbank Mining Village. There are 4 pages of valuation rolls free to download for 1895 which give the names of all heads of household in the village and their occupations.
