Bron y Foel Hall Llandwrog, was it a hall, can't find any info
« on: Tuesday 28 December 10 16:54 GMT (UK) »
Hi

On the 1871 census David Jones, wife Elizabeth and children live at Bron y Foel Hall, Llandwrog.  He is a farmer owning 50 acres of land and also a writing slate manufacturer employing 5 men and 3 boys.

 RG10; Piece: 5714; Folio: 10; Page: 12;

I have tried Googling but cannot find any information at all about this place.  Was it a large house or a hall?

Any information appreciated

Joan

I too would like to know more abut Bronyfoel Hall, Cesarea, Llandwrog.

My gt.grandmother, Jane Jones, died 30th December 1908,  Ysgubor, Nantlle, the informant being my Taid, R.O.Jones, his address was Bronyfoel Hall.

Google it to see if it still exists today.

Or look it up on the Royal mail  find a postcode web site.  Then with Post code find it on Google Earth.

Bronyfoel Hall produces a number of mentions in 19th century newspapers in the mid-late 1800s.  Trouble (for me) is they are nearly all in Welsh.  Those that I can read seem to suggest David Jones of Bronyfoel Hall was quite a philanthropist, hosting an entertainment for schoolchildren in 1865 and being mentioned as a supporter of the school in 1869.  Broenfoel Hall appears to have been in Upper Llandwrog, there is also mention of a Bronyfoel National School.  Bronyfoel school, Y Fron, comes up in Google images (LL54 7BB) and on Google Earth.  No luck on any maps of the time though.  Probably not very helpful but it's a grey afternoon!  MaxD

Hello everyone and thanks for your comments

Scouse boy, as I mentined I tried Googling but no luck.

MaxD, what interesting information,  Would love to know more about David Jones - looks like I'll have to keep digging

Glenys,

I'm doing my nephews tree.  He decends from David Davies Jones, son of David & Elizabeth, who married Mary Ann Lewis.  Don't suppose you happen to know Elizabeth's maiden name.  There are so many marriages (I had considered it may be Davies as their son had this as a middle name) but have had no luck.  I can't afford to buy lots of certificates, I'm just doing as much as I can for my nephew, his partner's tree and their twins.

Thanks once again
Joan

Hi
I live in the area, but not a native. Had a look at the Censuses. There's a William Gullett and family there in 1841; David Frazer and family in 1851; failed to find it in 1861; as your info in 1871. From the names of neighbouring houses, it appears to be below Y Fron, but can't see it on current two and a half inch map. Suspect it might be a place which has undergone substantial reconstruction in recent years, off to the left of the road down to Meillionyd (big g). Will check older, larger scale map, Royal Mail Postcode website and make enquiries of somebody familiar with history of the area

Hello Emyr,

Thank you for taking such an interest in my post.  It's good of you to go out of your way for Glenys and myself.  Looking forward to hearing any information you may find.

Emyrborth thoughts gell with mine.  I too looked at neighbouring house names and looked at the Y Fron area in detail on comtemporary and victorian maps, without success.  The idea of checking local knowledge is always a good one.

Emyr,
Thank you so much for your interest and help, as always, and thanks also to you maxD.

Here's hoping 2011 will bring Joan and I some information.

Joan,
My Jones family were not connected, as far as I know, to the David Jones you mention.   My Jones family originated in Beddgelert, then moved to Nantlle.
