Rev Robert Mathie of Glendevon
« on: Friday 31 December 10 10:26 GMT (UK) »
Hi Everyone

I'm trying to break down one of the brickwalls in my husband's tree with not a lot of sucess - can anyone help?

Rev Robert Mathie was minister in Glendevon from 1775-1789. He was married to Christian Dundas and died in 1789.

I've got some information on him from the Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae. This helps to tie him to his son Robert Mathew a farmer at Elmbank, Kinnoull. Robert Junior's death certificate in 1855 states his parents were Rev Robert Mathew of Glendevon and Christian Dundas. Obviously the family name has been corrupted in that generation.

The Fasti Ecclesiae states that Robert Mathie was the second son of David Mathie of Blackford. He was educated at Glasgow Uni and licensed on 17/12/1765, called 19/1/1775 and ordained 11/5/1775. He died 29/3/1789. Married Christian Dundas on 24/7/1776 and had children Robert, George, Alison, John, Margaret and then another Margaret.

The only Mathie I can find in Blackford at the right time to be Robert Mathie's parents is David Mathie and Isobel Duncan. They have two children on the IGI - Margaret b 1740 and John b 1747. There is a marriage for a David Mathie and an Isobel Duncan but it's in Abercorn, West Lothian in 1724 so quite a bit out in terms of dates.

Can anyone help out with Robert Mathie's dob or his parents marriage details?

Also trying to find out about Christian Dundas too.

Many thanks for any help.

Happy New Year!

Further to this, I've checked the marriage in Abercorn and it is the right one! David Mathie, of Blackford parish and Isobel Duncan of Abercorn - just goes to show you can never assume!

Can anyone help me get further with Robert Mathie or his parents?

Hi Ery

The connection is my husband's as he is descended from Rev Robert Mathie through his son Robert.

What was your wife's connection to the family?

Actually the same, and then through Robert's son Robert Dundas Mathews of Co. Limerick. Is your husband descended from his brother Mungo or sister Margaret Moffet?

It's through their brother William. He had a son David. William went to Ireland too.

I've done a good bit on Robert Dundas Matthews so will look it out.
