William Roberts - Bampton 1700's
« on: Friday 31 December 10 11:49 GMT (UK) »
I am after any information about a William Roberts who married Sarah Phillips in 1758 in Bampton.

His son John Roberts (Christened in Bampton in 1758) moved to Wokingham in Berkshire and became the Under Sheriff on Oxfordshire and Berkshire and was a Solicitor. He married Lucy Lamplow in Wokingham in 1806.

Any information about the family or Bampton would be great.  I would love to find out where they lived in Bampton and possible profession.

Only joined this site just before Christmas........its amazing!

Thanks in advance.
Jo

Thank you very much for that, I am going to try and fit that all into my family tree.   Did you manage to get all that from the Parish Records?

Is there one main church in Bampton?   I am thinking of having a day out there and maybe seeing if I can find the graves.

Many thanks for your help.

Jo

The records are from St Mary the Virgin in Bampton - which would have been the only CoE church there during the 18thC.

Hope you have a successful visit to the graveyard  :) .

Roberts Family - Bampton Oxfordshire
« Reply #4 on: Sunday 12 March 17 10:45 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I am researching the Roberts family who lived in Bampton in 1600-1800.    In particular I am looking at John Roberts 1700-1779 and his son William Roberts 1736-????.

If anyone has any information about the family, where they lived, occupation etc.  I would be so grateful.  They were a wealthy family by all accounts, certainly John Roberts, Williams son, was a huge landowner in Berkshire.

I have the baptism records, but no death record for William.  I can not find any reference to them in Bampton, although they were married in St, Marys Church and had all their children baptised there.   I did read that William had links to Bampton Manor, but I cant find any information about this property.

Any help would be great, or any suggestions of were I could take my research.   I am not sure of the best resources for this moment in history.

Many thanks
Jo

There is a site on-line 'History of the Fredrick and Whitaker families associated with Bampton Manor Oxfordshire', that will give you a considerable amount of information regarding Bampton Manor and it's owners over many years.

Jo

The name William ROBERTS appears in the Bampton Vestry records, now in the Oxfordshire History Centre. He attended Vestry meetings frequently between 1763 and 1787.

In 1769 he was appointed to serve for Bampton with the Trustees of Mrs
DEWE's charity to direct the building of the workhouse to a plan provided by Mr
FREDERICK (35v). He was Overseer for the poor of Bampton in1772 (79v), 1775
(74v), 1783 (73v), 1784 (55v) and 1785 (58r): in 1771 he was appointed a charity
trustee of: - Moor Closes and Lake Kiddy Close (40r - also 30r, but deleted
there), Brookfast Furlong Close and Moor Close, the Appleton estate, the School
Closes, the Closeland and Commons at Lew and the Weald Closes and Commons
(all 40r). In 1787 he was a member of a committee to inspect the workhouse
(62r).

The numbers in brackets refer to the folio number in the original minute book.

If you are a member of OFHS you will find a name index to the relevant volume of the Vestry Minutes for Bampton in the Members Only Area.

Hope this helps,

Bill
