Temperance movement and Temperance Hotel Maryport

Hi every one in trying to see if any body knows anything about the Temperance movement in Northern Cumberland. Perticularly there was a temperance hotel in maryport at 125 senhouse street, orginally owned by Hodgson/Finlay then taken over by my relitives the SHAW's at a unknown time between 19?? and 1914 then the building  is next owned by the british legion . if any one knows of any details, stories or even picture i would love to hear from you as its proven a hard area so far.

cant be certain but I think was called the Maryport Band of Hope but I will dig out a book and have a look

I think it could be as the map i have just been looking at shows that it backs on to 33 curzon street which was a confectionry shop they also owned

Looking at Senhouse St prompted me to look at where my ancestor Ann SCOTT had lived - her "Small China Shop" was No.75 http://tinyurl.com/357dpfb

Thomas Shaw was certainly running the temperance hotel at 125 in 1910 according to Kelly's Directory. Curiously there was also a waverley temperance hotel in Curzon St. Also curiously, when I worked in Maryport, the owner of the Waverley Hotel was TT and kept the best beer in Maryport as he only tasted it when cleaning the pipes and didn't drink it. I'm assuming he's dead now as it is a lot of years ago although daughter Susan may have taken over.

Just checked your map Geoff and yes, that's the Waverley at the other end of the block from the hairdressers. If memory serves me well, that used to be a chemists. bob
