Cornford family

Hello.
I am trying to find the parents of a William Cornford, who married a Mary Hailer 06 .05 .1787, I have been given a birth date, of 14.12.1769 son of Thomas  Cornford and Philadelphia Bellchamber, but this can't be right, as Philadelphia, wife of Thomas Cornford, died 09.03.1769, a few weeks after the birth of there daughter Elizabeth, 06.02.1769. the only other child for them I can find is Richard bt 28.03.1766.
any help would be much appreciated.

An unsupported entry on the IGI gives your William (son of Thos & Philadelphia of Walberton) a suggested birth year of 1759 and death in Hurstmonceux on 9th October 1844.  If those details are correct, it looks like him and his wife Mary in the district of Hailsham on the 1841 census, both with their ages slightly rounded up.
There are over 20 people on Genes Reunited that also have this William Cornford in their family tree, about a third of them have his birth year as 1769, and the remainder 1759.

I looked on the SFHG database,i could see no William only Elizabeth baptised 16 Feb 1769.
Before that Richard 1766       & no other children.

Thomas & Philadelphia married in 1757.A big gap from marriage to 1st born unless she had miscarriages or Still born babies.

Again an unsupported mention in the IGI states Philidelphia was born the daughter of William BelchamberS and Ann Colbin in 1733 and died as you have said, in 1769.  Her IGI death record is also unsupported by a note of an enrtry in the registers and has her recorded under her maiden name.

I to got Philly death from SFHG, and looked for his birth there, and nothing.  I also saw the reference to 1759, which I thought was more likely, but no match up. As you say there is a big gap between there marriage and first births. So now I wonder if maybe they left Sussex for a while for work, may be kent.

I noted that the family had some family ties with Withyam.  If you go back to the IGI once again, you will see that although all the marriages from that parish have been well covered in the index there is a considreable gap in the records of baptisms.  Your William's baptism (if he was baptied that is) could be in that gap.
