Meidrim records for 1880-1920s
« on: Wednesday 05 January 11 22:12 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I'm currently researching a book about finding my Welsh roots. My father grew up in Carmarthen but was sent to school in England and never really came back. His father grew up on a farm in Meidrim. His father was Thomas Rees and so far as I know was the occupant of a farm called Bwlch untiil 1901 then moved that year to Corn Gafr (the ruins of which I have visited). There were nine children in the family and, according to a post I have seen here, had three servants in 1901. Is there a clever/easy way of finding out more information about the family. Thomas Rees is thought to have been born in 1860, his wife Elizabeth (Eliza Davies, daughter of Sophia Harries Davies) in 1865. She died in 1911; he died in 1924. I am keen to know when they might have left the farm at Corn Gafr. I am keen to know anything basically.

Acknowledgements will be duly made in my book, which is published later this year.

thank you,

Jasper

Hello Jasper :)

Welcome to Rootschat!

If you think your relative owned the properties, you could purchase title register and plans from Land Registry for a modest amount. this would be still be useful as it would show ownership changes over time.

You could also contact Carmarthen Record Office as they will have local information such as land valuation records, estate papers, and old maps or perhaps photographs of the property. If you are unable to visit the office they offer a research service for about £25 per hour, and will provide an estimate on request. You need to have a Readers ticket and pre-arrange your visit.
