St Owen, Hereford
« on: Thursday 06 January 11 15:49 GMT (UK) »
I was just wondering if someone would be able to tell me if St Owen is a place in Hereford or is it a Church name...

My 3x gt grandfather  Robert Pitt was born on 17th Dec 1807 in St Owen, Hereford and baptised on 28th Dec 1807 in St Owen, Hereford....

Robert's parents were Thomas and Mary Pitt....Robert had a sister Martha born in 1818 but I'm not able to find out if there were any other siblings..

Thank you for any help..

Hi Jules

I am looking at a map of Hereford dated 1802.
and it shows the parish of St Owen as the area of the city contained within  a big loop of the river wye to the Southeast of the city centre, so it was both a district and a parish with a church.
St Owen street is still a main road and its still an area of the city.

Regards Mazi's oh

mazis oh again

I am having difficulty finding the church tho', it may have been absorbed into St Peters, which still exists, maybe before the period you are refering to.

added. I have found a reference on an 1860 map to "old st owens burial ground" so it was gone by then.

Backing up what Mazi's OH mentioned, my OH (an archaeologist working in Hereford) says that St Owen's Church and St Owen's gate was at the other end of St Owen St to where St Peters stands.

I will stand corrected, but I believe that the Church and burial ground was where St.Owens Street joins Bath Street. just past the fire station.

In the late 1960's early 1970's the ring road was routed through there!

I understand that the graves were exhumed and moved to another graveyard, I am sure that the Hereford Records Office will be able to assist.

The church that is situated at the start of St Owen St is St Peters Church which lies on St Peters Sq where the WW memorial is. The shirehall is off set from St Peters Church but as long as I have lived in Hereford I know of no Church on St Owen Street, but im only 30 so this church may of stood way before my time? My dad would possibly have a better idea of an old church that may of stood on St Owen street not to sure? I have many books on Hereford so will have a browse through them and see what is said in there.
