Alchorne Family of Rotherfield
« on: Friday 07 January 11 06:15 GMT (UK) »
Hey my name is Jethro
Im a direct descendant of Richard Alchorne of Fletching, born 1450
Through his son Thomas Alchorne 1475.
I was wondering if anyone knows the identity of Richards wife and parents?
And thomas' wife?
I know Thomas was the father of my ancestor Nicholas Alchorne/Alcherne born 1505-1575 who married Julyan born 1507

Hi Jethro

Welcome to Rootschat :)

If my memory serves me right,Church Records did`nt start until c1538.

I have the Sussex Marriage Index pre 1837 on CD.The earliest Alchorne marriage on there is 1539.

Not much help,sorry.

Kind Regards

Hey Omega, and thanks for your kind reply :D
Thats okay I guess, the burden of having it traced back the far, and hitting a wall I
suppose.
I have another branch Im trying to shed some light on?
And another member of Roostchat has posted on it but it hasnt helped a whole lot
Richard Alchorne 1450 is my ancestor through my great grandfather Geoffrey Wallace Stephensons mother Hilda Willis Alchin, but im also curious about his Wife Mavis Dolly Fox's mother Annie Mary Boyd's ancestry, I know Annie's mother was Agnes Colville and her father was John Boyd, and Agnes' parents were Samuel Colville of Islandmagee and Mary Thompson.
Im wondering who Samuel Colville and Mary Thompson's ancestors were? Parents and up?
And John Boyds ancestors aswell?

Have you googled your names of interest?,you never know ,you maybe lucky.

Good luck with you research

Hi, Jethro,  My research is more centered on Rotherfield and I can not go back as far as you in direct line. I believe the earliest is John Alchorne 1509- 1580 who lived on Alchorne Manor. I have a copy of the book 'Rotherfield' by Catherine Pullien.  In there she gives a nine gen. perigee for Alchorne/Allcorn.  My father is the last name.  good luck

Hi I to descend from Richard Alchorne. The family went to Rotherfield and then Alciston Sussex. I have Agnes Hert as Thomas's wife. There is also a pedigree for this family on The Weald along with another Alchorne family. Not sure if they are connected.

Hi Lisa B.  My ancestor is Richard Alchorne ch.23th March 1670 at St Denys Rotherfield.  Buried same church 14th April 1710. I do not agree with the Weald web site when they put two generations of weavers into a family that have been farmers for hundereds of years.  The Saxon migration was from the coast into the Weald to all those villages with 'field' endings,  Alciston founded by a Saxon named Aelsiege (Ai-his-tun) farm.  The family were Alchehorne, where horne is spur as in spur of a hill or as in Matterhorne.  So Al-of the -Hill.  See Sussex Family Historian Sept. 2017. V.22 No.7 Page 344.  If you are not a member of the Sussex Family History Group then this is a well spent £15.00 a year.

Hi thanks for your reply. I was actually refering to the 1450 Richard as mentioned by jethrosutherland . As far as I am aware the family of Alchorne are all descended from the same ancester and I understand the Wearld uses church records and family documents to form family line of descent. I wasnt sure about a blacksmith being the head of a large farming family either!
My ancester John bap Alciston married Jane Holney. His father was Richard bap St Denys Rotherfield married Mary Selme at Rodmell
