Cocking family of Gainsborough
« on: Sunday 09 January 11 16:26 GMT (UK) »
I have John Cocking b. 1817 North Wheatley m. 1850 to Martha ? b. 1820 North Scarle. So far I've traced seven children, all born in Gainsborough: Ann b.1845, John b. 1847, Robert 1849 b. 1849, George b. 1851, Henry b. 1853, James b. 1855 and Tom b. 1857. Henry joined the Royal Artillery and is my drect ancestor. Has anyone any information on the other children and their descendents or the parents?
Simmons, Bond, Cocking, Forsdick, Ware, Perkins, Farley, Davis, Hodge, Yeo, Pugsley, Searle, Dunn, Setter, Maddock.

Marriages Sep 1842
BARKER    Martha        Gainsbro    14   395
COCKING    John         Gainsbro    14   395

Her bap http://tinyurl.com/32tnuv9

The parents of this John COCKING http://tinyurl.com/2wy4glj seem to have had some later children at North Wheatley, so perhaps John thought it was the place he was born.
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Thanks very much for the info.. I have copy of Henry's service record; he was stationed at Gibraltar, Bermuda, Halifax Nova Scotia, St Helena and Plymouth. My grandmother was born on Drake's Island in Plymouth Sound - one of the Palmerston Forts. As regards John's birthplace, North Wheatley is listed in the Mormon's online 1881 census where he is shown as a licensed victualler and farmer of 36 acres. I've come across North Wheatley, Beckingham, Walkeringham, Gringley on the Hill, Saundby and Gainsborough in connection with the Cockings so I assume they are all branches of the same family.

I have an Elizabeth Cocking (?- 1783) marrying Richard Undy (1697-1768)at West Retford, Notts in 1737, if this any help. I would be interested in any info about this Elizabeth.
