Three-well-brae is a row of cottages on the east side of the B723 Lockerbie to Annan road just south of Middleshaw. It is right on the boundary of the parishes of St. Mungo and Hoddom parishes, and in early census records the house is listed in St. Mungo parish, but after 1861 in Hoddom parish. It is possible that the house was rebuilt slightly to the south of the original site in the 1850s, the Ordnance Survey 1st edition maps of 1857 seem to indicate that there is a building just north of the present cottages on the other side of the boundary as shown on those maps.

Here is a link to the 1851 census for Three-well-brae:

http://maxwellancestry.com/census/51transcript.aspx?houseid=84701034

There are links on the page to the old Ordnance Survey maps sheets and current Google mapping (unfortunately there is no detailed satellite imagery on Google maps yet for much of Dumfriesshire, so either zoom out or use Street View).

Hope this helps,

Emma

Hi Allan,

I’m glad it’s helped; it’s so nice to see where your ancestors actually lived isn’t it. We have been mapping the census for a while now but most of Dumfriesshire is still to do, we’re hoping google will update the images at some point, which will make it easier. If there are any other places please let us know and we can add the mapping.

At the moment the whole of Peeblesshire is mapped and much of Roxburghshire along with parts of Dumfriesshire and Berwickshire. Again though if you find an address you would liked mapped please just let me know.

Emma

Hello Emma,

Do you have Slodahill Cottage and Linn Mill mapped - both Dumfriesshire (Dryfesdale)?  Slodahill cottage is just a few roadside ruins if I have the place correct.

Hi Allan and Ceeoh,

We have managed to do some mapping for you, notice that some spellings have presumably been transcribed wrongly from the original census pages, the corrected versions appear below:

Millantae, St. Mungo parish:
http://www.maxwellancestry.com/census/51transcript.aspx?houseid=84702028

Banksideyett, St. Mungo parish:
http://www.maxwellancestry.com/census/51transcript.aspx?houseid=84703025

Linn Mill, Dryfesdale parish:
http://www.maxwellancestry.com/census/51transcript.aspx?houseid=82005016

Knockhill, Hoddom parish:
http://www.maxwellancestry.com/census/51transcript.aspx?houseid=82903046

Slodahill Cottage, Dryfesdale parish:
http://www.maxwellancestry.com/census/51transcript.aspx?houseid=82001038

Please note that detailed aerial mapping for most of Dumfriesshire has not yet been provided through Google, so you will need to zoom out or use StreetView when possible.

Malzie Smithy and Ballaird Smithy are one and the same address, which is still there today, referred to differently in different census years. The smithy was between Malzie and Ballaird. This parish is not part of our census database yet, however, the link below will still map the spot for you:

http://www.maxwellancestry.com/census/displaymap.aspx?la=54.855036&lo=-4.538727&addr=Malzie%20or%20Ballaird%20Smithy

Allan, there are several places called Saughtree – do you know what parish or general area is the one of interest?

Hope this helps,

Emma

Many thanks Emma

Unfortunately as yet Linn Mill and Slodahill are not on Google, however, the census returns were very useful.  Many thanks.

I think I can try and find them on street view.  I have pics of Linn Mill ruins and know they are correct.  Also pics of Sloda Hill Cottage ruins, but not as sure they are correct.

Thanks for you help.

Could I ask for Byresteads - also Dryfesdale - to be included.
