Another Lost Ancestor
« on: Tuesday 11 January 11 11:52 GMT (UK) »
I am having problems with IGI
My 6XG/F William Knight married Rachel Chrisdee 12 Oct 1807 at Holy Trinity Church, Millbrook, S'hampton.

I was never able to go further back with these two and put a plea out on Rootschat.

I received a reply stating that Rachel Chrisdee was christened 3/4/1785 at St Faith's Havant. And that a William Knight was also christened at this church 16/9/1778.

Chrisdee is a very unusual name I have only found one other previously on a UK search. So I believe that this is 'my Rachel'. It is also possible that the above William became her husband.

Problem: Cannot find them on IGI now but know they were both listed. Secondly, how do I go about making the link between these two and the marrige at Millbrook?

Thanks

I have found the marriage on the new IGI site and in a transcript.

I've also found Rachel's baptism in Havant.  Her parents had two other children baptised in Portsea before Rachel.  These were listed as Cresdee.

Do either of them live to beyond 1837?  If so using the age at death might be a step on the way.  What about a will?  Is that likely?  If you can get to see the original marriage entry, there may be a clue, but if they were living in Millbrook and married by banns, then the only clues may be in the witness names.  :(

Jebber has one small mistake: George Augustus Cresdee was born on the 27th June 1826 not 26th September 1830. G.A.Cresdee was my Great,Great Granfather.

I did not make a mistake, if you note the line above the list, I said they were baptisms, not birth dates, ;D

So sorry to all of you for not reponding to all your hard work. This is due to family health problems curtailing my genealogy research. Unfortunately things are not improving, but I will come back to you all as soon as I can

Thank you all again

Hi All
I am back, not fighting fit, but still here.
Little Nell, thanks for the input, I have Rachal's siblings on record. I went to Winchester and the only extra info was the witnesses but they were not of any help. I did notice the spelling difference which make me think twice.

Jebber, the Chrisdees, Thanks I did not have William. The other Cresdee's I will have to wade through, but I think trying to make a connection will be very difficult.

I now subscribe to An****y some am make a rod for my back trying to research my wife's family, still I have pushed it back 2 generations this week.

Thank you both, I will be visiting the UK in July, providing my wife has her replacement hip joint done in time. Still, the sun has shined all day here and we had a very pleasant Thai lunch on the seafront today, whilst my son had fish and chips in the pouring rain on holiday in Cornwall.

Thanks once more for your efforts, I'll keep banging away at this mystery.

There's a marriage of William Cresdee and Rachel Liddell at Portsea St Mary on 9 May 1780. Could be the parents of your Rachel (bapt 1785)
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

Some other ones that may fit somewhere:
John Cresdee married Margaret Boyter or Boyler on 10 Sep 1769 at Alverstoke, I think they would be the John and Margaret referred to on Jebber's list of baptisms.
i.e at Gosport Peggy 1770, Elizth 1772, Elizabeth 1776, Ann 1778, Mary 1782 and  at Alverstoke Jane 1788, and a couple of extras at Alverstoke John bapt 23 Dec 1792 (born 29 Oct 1790) and David (as Crisday), private baptism 18 Apr 1797.

This David could be the one who later married Hannah Marten (at bottom of Jebber's list).

There are also two Cresdee burials in Alverstoke during the period John and Margaret are there.
Samuel 4 Sep 1787 and Jane 12 Sep 1787. No indication of age or relationships on the transcripts unfortunately, but they could be unbaptised infants - not necessarily twins dying within days of each other, they weren't very quick getting John baptised and there is quite a gap between Mary 1782 and Jane 1788.
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
