Joseph's birth should be included in civil records, so it may be possible to locate the correct reference in the BMD Index to order a birth cert for him.

See the following topic for details on searching the Index, ordering certs etc :

Hi,
You might have found bye now the information you were looking for but if you are still looking I can give you a bit of information on the Matthews, Joseph Benjamin Jackson Matthews was born 12 Feb 1890 Chelsea London his brother Glbert was born 1891 Headington Oxfordshire and he also had 2 other brothers, Wilfred Hubert Edward Matthews born 20/9/1894 died 1895 Chelsea, father Joseph B.J. Matthews and mother Annie, the other brother was William Henry Matthews b. 31/3/1889 Chelsea with the same parents, cannot find a death for him, also Joseph snrs occupation on each baptism was a Butler, Annie their mother was born in Ireland and Joseph and Gilbert said on their Army records in Australia NSW that they were born in Ireland, goodness knows why, maybe they went back to Ireland where their mother came from and took that as there birth place, only they said it was Tipperary and their mother came from Cork, I have been helping some one else with this same family, so that is how I know so much, hope this helps you.
