Gordon Square Wallsend

Hi just to let you know I was from Gordon square in Wallsend, it was pull down in the mid 70's for fear it would collapse & not the mid 60's as some one said earlier.

Gordon Square was still in existence in the early seventies when I still lived in Wallsend. It was a square of flats with a central courtyard and it filled the block formed by John Street, Elton Street, David Street and Equitable Street. According to the "old maps" website, it was built sometime between 1916 and 1937, ie. it doesn't appear on the 1916 map but does on the 1937 map. From memory, the flats were three or four stories and had elevated walkways between the blocks. It had a reputation for "hardness" (you wouldn't mess with lads from Gordon Square).

Only know it has been pulled down, my grandparents lived there used to visit every year on holiday absolutely loved it.

Jusr ri cofirm gordon Square was pulled down in the early to mid 70"s. I lived there untill I was 8yrs old and found it to be a warn family enviroment to live in

Hi, I lived in Gordon from birth in 1956 until I was about 18, my mother was the caretaker for most of that time, my brother, sister and me used to sweep the square every day before going to school. I believe it was originally built for polish ship workers. There was a catholic school op posit.

Hello TomWaters and all who have contributed to this post.  I started the enquiry some years ago now.  My friend Pat is a keen amateur fiction writer and was writing a fiction book about Gordon Square hence the enquiry.  I have’nt seen her for a year or more now but again thank you for the input.
