America via Canada

Hello
Can anyone help, have a william Hughes who in 1907 left England and entered   America via Canada.

I not sure if his plans were to  stay in Canada but than  he changed his mind and went to America (Boston)!

I am completly stuck as where to start

Let me have a few more details on him ie date / place of birth and anything else you can think of or know that may be useful.

I have recently started searching for family that emigrated to Canada and found some had drifted down into US.

William born  approx 1880 to Ellen and William Hughes .

Born in  the workhouse Bridgenorth Shropshire

Father seems to have disappered William left England to look for him

William later married Maud Clarke who was from Canada

this was quite common, usually entering via montreal or quebec city. Just so you know, it wasn't uncommon for alot of people on both sides of the border to intermarry. Therefore it's quite common for people to find that if they do have relatives from back east as I do, it's quite likely there will have been some cross border migration. I just found out last year I have some distant cousins in california

Hi Liz,

Up until 1908 you could come and go across the boarder as you pleased.  There was quite a few ferry crossings as well between Ontario and New York.

I'm interested in the Canada to U.S. immigration.

My paternal grandmother's family left Feltham, Middlesex, and ended up in Cook County, Illinois, but I can find no record of the immigration to the U.S.  They were in Middx for the 1871 U.K. census and in Illinois for the 1880 U.S. census.

Was there an advantage to going to and through Canada to get to the U.S.?  Was travel between particular ports more likely?  For example, I believe they left from London, so is there "most likely" Canadian arrival port?
