Macnab of Glasgow
« on: Monday 17 January 11 07:03 GMT (UK) »
I am researching JAMES COOKE MACNAB of Glasgow, born there in 1891, son of James Gibb Macnab, Glasgow & Lydia Cooke, Dublin, who was my grandfather’s cousin.
James fought in WW1, and came up through the ranks to be a Lieut. in 1917. He was awarded the Military Cross the same year. His medals were sold at auction in 2006, probably by a member of his family.

1901 Census Scotland- 8 Cowan St. Govan, Lanarkshire:
James G. Macnab, 41, b. Glasgow, & Lydia T. C. Macnab, 33, b. Dublin,
James C. 9, b. Glasgow, Scholar,
Agnes 8,  John C. 5,  Richard S. 3,  Lillie J. 11 mths. all b. Glasgow

I would be grateful for any  information about this family.

In 1938 he stated that he was married. In 1956 he was single.
I believe that he married in 1925, but I have not found the name of his wife, nor any children.
It seems that he was either a widower, or divorced, by 1956.

British Phone Books- Glasgow, 1942:
MacNab, James C. 59 Baronald Drive W.2
That was his address also in 1936 and in 1956.
I believe he died in 1982 in Scotland, 91 years old.

Thank you Bruce,
I was not sure he married in 1925, but now I am.
I know I'll find my Scottish cousins sooner or later.
Ken

Thank you Sancti,
I just wonder what "not permissible" means.
His wife's maiden name was Gunn, apparently. West could have been her middle name. Could it have been from a previous marriage ?
She was born about 1888, three years older than James, and would have been 37 when they married in 1925. It's a bit old to be having children.
I wonder why he never took her on any of his sea voyages.
