Historic Gypsy photo collection launched online today
« on: Wednesday 19 January 11 18:31 GMT (UK) »
Katy Hooper of the Gypsy Collections, University of Liverpool, tells me that they have today published their complete collection of photos by Fred Shaw online here:

http :// sca.lib.liv.ac . uk/ead/html/gb141smgcshaw-p2.shtml
http://sca-arch.liv.ac.uk/ead/html/gb141smgcshaw-p1.shtml(*)

If you click on the links in the left-hand Contents panel, you can see thumbnails of 300+ digitised photos, mainly of British Romany families, with names, locations and dates. The photos date from the 1890s to the 1940s.

There are also some photos of Greek, Gallician and Belgian Gypsies who travelled through Britain on their way to the USA in the early 20th century.

Hope you find an ancestor's portrait here.

Best wishes
Sharon

Hi Marona

You can visit the Gypsy Collections to take a look at the photos. There's no charge. You just need to make an appointment. You'll find them very friendly and welcoming.

Or you can download an order form and get a copy of the photo done in the size of your choice and posted to you. Obviously, there's a charge for that. You'll find info about the copying service here:

Hello

The Collection's held in Liverpool. You can look at them there in person (at no cost). Or you can order copies of any photo by post using a form that you download from the website. There's a charge for a print.

I've been in touch with the Special Collections Librarian to see if there are any other options now that these photos have been digitised. I'll share her answer when I hear.

Best wishes
