There are some details on IGI for this Sutherland family, both actual extract and submitted. In respect of the direct line up, this looks to be Lewis' father birth details:

ANDREW NEIL SUTHERLAND Born on 09 MAY 1855 in Dunfermline, Fife
Parents: ANDREW SUTHERLAND and AMELIA MC DIARMID (mother's name fits with a Will & Testament entry showing on Scotlands People for Andrew Snr, husband of Amelia).

Submitted details confirming Andrew Neil Sutherland's marriage to Christina PURVES on 22 MAR 1883 at the Free Church Manse Troqueer, Maxwelltown, Kirkcudbright.

Have a look also at this link http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/warmemscot-post-40157.html - I wondered whether it could be Lewis' father who shows on the Roll of Honour for WW1.

Frances, I'll leave you with all of this - looks a really interesting family to research  :)

Thank you Monica for all your help with this one. I spent a very happy afternoon in the big suitcase of photographs and found Mrs Sutherland first of all then the man himself resplendant in his black coat which makes it difficult to reproduce. It was taken in Inverness.
I had a day with my late mum identifying all these otherwise I would never have guessed the other one is of his wife Jean.

You must have had such a fun afternoon going through that 'big suitcase' - what fun! Thank you for adding the photos of him and his wife. It always makes the stories so much more real when you can put a face to the histories.

Hi Marie,

It may be an idea to start a new thread with your interest as it may be lost on this thread as researchers tend to follow 'Subject' heading names/areas & info.

His dad was Andrew Neil Sutherland - Free Church minister who married a Christina Purves on 27 March 1883 at Maxweltown and that is as far as I can go without Free Church records.
You could get the marriage certificate from Scotland's People - that would take you back another generation. You don't need church records until you get back past 1855.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Welcome to RootsChat Marie  :) I think this is the post and photo links you mean www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=611048.msg4604971#msg4604971. I am not connected to this line or area but just trying to help with further info.

Good luck with your searches!

If you are interested in going back from Andrew Neil Sutherland, there is a web-site which specialises in Free Church ministers and although it doesn't have much in this case, you might be interested in looking at it: http://ecclegen.com/ministers-s/#SUTHERLAND%20ANDREW%20NEIL
