Great Hamilton Street, Calton c. 1921
« on: Thursday 20 January 11 16:43 GMT (UK) »
Need some help trying to find a specific number of Great Hamilton Street (now London Street) in Calton. The number I am looking for is No. 130 which will be a tenement building, as many were.

I have this map from 1912 http://maps.nls.uk/atlas/bartholomew/view/?id=1206 which shows the street perfectly, but no building numbers to help me.

Looking at the Post Office Directories for Glasgow for this period, I can see that a BINNEY PLACE crossed over between Nos. 152 and 160. Also, a MORRIS PLACE crossed over between Nos. 106 and 108.

Problem is, I cannot see those streets on the 1912 map  :-\ Would anyone know where Binney and Morris Place were from the map?

Monica  :)

Hi Monica,
from my 1909 map, Morris Place is the street running from Gt hamilton to Montieth Row, opposite Claythorn St. There is a public house on the corner of Morris St & Gt Hamilton and a UF Church across the Rd from Morris Pl if that helps.
Streets will be numbered from the City Centre end being lowest.

Thanks John  :) I should be able to find it from your directions now as I have seen the other streets you mention on the 1912 map. It's where my father was born. I am revitalised on his searches having just received his WW2 service papers from the MOD.

Monica on your map Binnie Place is the small street between Great Hamilton and Monteith and looks like an extension of Green Street

Ooh - I am there now, John and Sancti - thank you both  :) Lucky on the connections with Green Street as this is about one of the few photos I can find on Gr Hamilton Street (photo of junction with Green Street) from the Mitchell Virtual Library. The family then moved to Montieth Row, No. 30....my next challenge!

monica your streets you are looking for still exist as they all run on to glasgow green from london road they are no houses on binnie place but new builds back on to this there are new builds on morris place monteith row has one remaining building from the 1800s which is now a refuge house thereare some good photos on urban glasgow web site from the early 70s showing the demise of the calton if it is of any help to you alas there is no origanal buildings apart from the fore mentioned that exists today but there is one tenement between green st and tabago st still standing which is being encompassed by a new office block as we write and also the templeton factory still survives as a modern multi purpose  building with its original features still intact.

Thank you garngad  :) I spent a while today on the Urban Glasgow site which is a great source for photos. I saw through Bing/google earth today the changes that have taken place to that whole area around Glasgow Green and Monteith Row. Complete transformation to what it must have looked like in the early part of the last Century for sure. Really struggling to find much on line (always a problem :'() on what these particular streets were like 60-80 years ago. The Mitchell Virtual Library had very little on them unfortunately.

My father is I am sure looking down on me today, laughing at my searches and endeavours (with the help of you all  ;)).

That is so kind of you garngad to post the photo, thank you. All looks a bit different doesn't it. I was looking at this photo earlier at the Mitchell Virtual Library www.rootschat.com/links/0bf0/ (I've shrunk the link).

With all the new info here on surrounding street names, I am going to go back on to the Urban Glasgow site and "take the walk" with more confidence than before!
