Help Please William Dawkins
« on: Sunday 23 January 11 17:45 GMT (UK) »
Hello All,

This is my first post so I hope you can help (I am also posting this in the middlesbrough sections)

I am searching the dawkins family tree and have come across a gentlemen who is beginning to give me a headache.

I have this person William Dawkins born 1881 Witton Park Durham living with George Dawkins (father) in 1901 in Middlesbrough, but I would like to find out who Williams mam is.... I also do not have any records for George Dawkis born 1855/1856 in Wales for the year off 1881.

So if any off you can help me find Williams mam and possibly even were George is located in 1881 that would help me greatly.

Many Thanks
Kelly x

Hi Kelly,

Welcome to Rootschat!

On first inspection of freebmd there is no record of a William Dawkins born in Co Durham in 1881.

However there is a William Dawkins born in Hartlepool Co Durham
March quarter 1879 10a 130.

To find out who his mother was you will need to buy his birth certificate you will then need the type of information that I have given below, but the above chap may, or may not be your man. The link below is the place to go to order such a certificate.

Best wishes,

It may help to see the 1901 census entry.
It looks like William is a son of an earlier marriage of George - who would have been born 1880 or early 1881.

1901 census RG13-4585 Folio 10
6 Wood Street, Grangetown, Eston
George DAWKINS Head Mar 46 Mill Furnaceman (steelworks) Mon Ebbw Vale

Interesting family. I suppose there is no reason why one should not marry ones step daughter.

Possible marriage
Marriages Jun 1891
Atkinson John Alfred Middlesbro' 9d 858
Dawkins George Middlesbro' 9d 858
Hollings Mary Ann Middlesbro' 9d 858  >>> fits 1901 census
Potter Charlotte Middlesbro' 9d 858
Ward Richard James Middlesbro' 9d 858

1891 Mary A HOLLINGS is age 18. stepdaughter and housekeepre
 of George DAWKINS at 60 Oxford Street, South Bank Normanby.
Wm DAWKINS is age 10 and a son of George.

The William DAWKINS born in Hartlepool id not the right one as he can be found in censuses with a different family.

I think this is the one we're after in FreeBMD

Hi All,

Many thanks for that info, yes it does appear that George Married step daughter Mary, but again I can not find a marriage between George and Mary's mam... as wouldn't he need to have married her mam for her to become his step daughter, or back them would he have just called step daughter rather then girlfriends daughter.. I am guessing she left her mam, to go with George to be a housekeeper... on the 1911 census it does have a Ms Martha Smith living with them as wifes mother and she is a widow... So I am guessing this would be Mary's mam??... and as for this William, it looks like a birth certificate is going to be in order, and hope I get the correct one...

Thanks again

Hi Kelly
I've still not found George in 1881 (maybe he was at sea) but may have sorted out his earlier marriage.

I thought this Caroline Elizabeth and Catherine Elizabeth may be the same woman and the mother of William - though maybe not a son of George.

Marriages Jun 1881
BULMER Thomas Auckland 10a 279
Dawkins George Auckland 10a 279
HANNOWAY Caroline Elizabeth Auckland 10a 279
MARSH Elizabeth Auckland 10a 279

Deaths Sep 1885
Dawkins Catherine Elizabeth 34 Middlesbro' 9d 316

Then this census entry would seem to be same woman. If you browse through the census entries nearby you may find George .

On 1881 census Rg11-4916 page 16 Folio 11
6 High Thompson Street,Witton Park, Escomb
Elizabeth HANNAN or (Hannanay) Head W 29 Formerly Blast furnace mans wife Cheshire Wrexhan
Peter do Son 9 Scholar DUR Witton Park
Catherine do Daur 7 Scholar DUR do
John do Son 5 Scholar DUR do
Patrick do Son 2 DUR do

Hi Kelly bit more scraps for you:

Looking for any connection to suggest why Mary A HOLLINGS was described as a stepdaughter - which then meant different things to what we now mean.

1891 Patrick HANNAWAY age 12 is in Eston; adapted son of Widow Catherine  McGANN who has a daughter age 19 born in Witton Park.

1891 John HANNAWAY age 14 is in Eston with his widowed aunt Bridget HANNAWAY and several of her children.

Can't find Catherine nor Peter in 1891

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Trying to find the earlier marriage of Catherine (Caroline) Elizabeth ?????
Deaths Jun 1876
HANNAWAY Peter 37 Auckland 10a 79
Deaths Jun 1878
Hannaway Patrick 42 Auckland 10a 108
Marriages Dec 1871
Hannaway Patrick Auckland 10a 415
Jones Elizabeth Auckland 10a 415
Murtagh William Auckland 10a 415
Stephens Jane Auckland 10a 415
1871 census Rg10-4926 folio 41
2 High Queen Street, Witton Park, Escombe, DUR
Rachel JONES Head Mar 61 Boarding H; Keeper Breck: Brecknock
Lizzie do Servant Unm 22 General Serv. Denbig: Ruthin
Michael McGLADE Boarder Mar 38 Iron Wks Labr Ireland
John BENNET Boarder Unm 38 Iron Wks Labr Ireland
Patrick HANNAWAY Boarder Unm 37 Iron Wks Labr Ireland
Henry HAGAN Boarder Unm 30 Iron Wks Labr Ireland
John McSHANE Boarder Unm 26 Iron Wks Labr Ireland
James McSHANE Boarder Unm 24 Iron Wks Labr Ireland
Peter McGLADE Boarder Unm 24 Iron Wks Labr Ireland
So looks possible that the mother of William DAWKINS born c. 1881 was Elizabeth JONES from Ruthin though some certificates are avisable to make sure.
Many thanks for the information
I have subscribed to the thread somehow that it emails me when people put replies on, so there is no need to duplicate information.
I will have a look at the information and see if I can make head nor tale off it.
