Whelan and Byrne
« on: Monday 31 January 11 23:12 GMT (UK) »
Researching my maternal grandmother's family who came from Carlow Town co Carlow Ireland.
Names are:
Mark Whelan and Mary nee Byrne - parents
children: Elizabeth b.1895 aka Lily, Bridget aka Bridie, Michael Francis, May, Peter, Paddy, (?) Eileen (?) came over to England around 1918 - known areas they lived - Whaley Bridge, Disley, Marple Bridge and Manchester.
1901 census - the family lived at 46 Stapleton Road, Mark is NOT there. Don't know where he is?
1911 census - family living at 38, Pollerton Road. Mark is with family now.
My grandmother (Elizabeth aka Lily)and siblings came over to England around 1917. She married Joseph Lomas in England and visited Carlow Town quite often in the 20's and early 30's. One of her children (Donald) died there as an infant. Any information would be very welcome as I am completely stuck on this family  :(

Thankyou.....these are mine.  :)
Michael Francis married Fanny Statham 1936.
I had found Mary's death in Marple Bridge, she was a regular visitor to  daughter Bridie who lived there.
Anything else regarding the Whelan/Byrne family would be welcome, particularly the parents Mark Whelan and Mary. Not found Mark's birth or death. Think I have found their [ Mark and Mary] marriage details (reg. oct/dec 1894) but not too sure on how to order a certificate from this side the pond!!
Thanks for any help

After you locate the reference details in the BMD Index you can use these to order a cert from the GRO

see :  Ordering Certs from GRO Roscommon

Thanks for your reply.
Can you please advise me on the best way to pay for a copy - as I don't want to send my card details through the post is it safe to send cash?
Hopefully once I get details of Mark and Mary's  fathers and their occupations I might be able to get a bit further back!
cheers for now

some people have tried the cash option, and it worked ok for them.

for example see reply #3 on the 'Ordering Certs from GRO Roscommon' topic

Thanks for that. Will order the certificate and report back with any queries that will inevitably arise !
Would love to know where Mark was in 1901 :( Family says he was in the British Army but I have found nothing to back this up. In 1911 census his age was 42 and his occupation was 'labourer'.

There is an M Whelan listed in ancestry on the 1901 census in Aldershot. Listed as a soldier for the First Home Counties Reserve Regiment and Fifth Royal Irish Regiment. His age is listed as 42 and place of birth is Ireland.

Or there is another M Whelan listed in the same regiment born 1882.

Hope this helps

Maybe.  :-\
In 1901 I think his age would have been around 31/32.
I'd best get hold of his marriage certificate [1894] to see what his occupation was and also my grandmother's birth certificate [1895]
Many thanks for your input, have posted on other sites and received absoluelty zilch.  :(
Any information forthcoming is much appreciated - thank you to everyone so far.
