Middleditch in Littleport
« on: Friday 04 February 11 15:49 GMT (UK) »

Trying to find baptisms in Littleport of the following:

Joseph Middleditch
Love Middleditch
Benjamin Middleditch

All early 1700's

They all married in London but cannot find any births/baptisms there.
Found from Josephs will that his deceased parents home was in Littleport, so wondered if they were born there.

Joseph married Elizabeth Nanfan 1758
Love married  Esther mackris 1759
Benjamin married Susannah 1766

Hi June,

This family seem to have been in Wisbech at least from 1729 when Joseph Middleditch (a barber) married Susanna De Camps on 25 September.

They baptised at Wisbech:

1 September 1730     Love
22 May 1732             Joseph
4 January 1736/37    Benjamin
12 June 1739            Susanna (buried 1740)
30 May 1741             John (buried 1741)
19 July 1742             Susanna (buried 1742/43)
13 September 1743  John

Joseph (barber) was buried 17 December 1766 and
Susannah (wid) 5 April 1771.

Selina

Thank you so much. Where did you find them? I've looked everywhere.
Do you know where the parents died/buried/

Thanks again

The parents, Joseph and Susanna, are buried Wisbech.

I can't see a baptism for either of them in Cambridgeshire at present.

A Love Middleditch (an unusual name) married in Littleport in 1726 and died there (presuming its the same one) in 1746.

Possibly connected to Joseph.

I don't know if you are still interested but I was in St. George's church, Littleport, today. There is a stone with graffiti from many centuries which I found fascinating. Scratched on the stone, perhaps in your ancestor's hand, I saw the following,

Love Middleditch churchwarden in ye years 1741 and 1742 1743

According to Ancestry.co.uk he was buried in Littleport on 2nd January 1726.

There might be a Familist connection here.

Wisbech was one of the main centres of activity for the late 16th / Early 17th century religious sect known as the Family of Love.

There remains uncertainty as to just how long familism persisted. Take a good look at his parents' wills, if you can. You are looking in particular for the phrase "my loving friend" used to describe beneficiaries and (particularly) executors. If you see that, it is a STRONG hint that the father was a Familist ... and the name "Love" then fits neatly into context.

I should also say ... I've got a Middleditch from Cambridgeshire in my tree, but quite a lot further back.

My great x12 grandfather Henry Reve married Mary Middleditch in Cheveley in 1561, and they lived in Wood Ditton.

I haven't been able to find anything out about Mary, though ...
