Hi Barbara !
I suppose there's a chance that Susannah could have died, and that Mary was his second wife
We shall have to delve a little deeper.

Hey folks, look at this....

Dec qtr 1841
ROPER    George        Shardlow    19   497
ROPER    George         Shardlow    19   500

This is getting exciting...

Deaths Sep qtr 1914
Roper    Susannah    74    Chesterfield    7b   754

If this is her, it would indicate that Susannah = Mary.

I feel that it is likely as there would be too much of a coincidence of date and place of birth to be exactly the same for a second wife and no death of Susannah is showing up.

This is indeed getting excited .... we have definitely pinned down George , and yes, looking highly possible that Susannah  & Mary could be one and the same, especially with that death record in Chesterfield! thank you so much for your continued help everyone .

Two possible deaths for George:-
Deaths Dec qtr 1918
George Roper age 77  Chesterfield    7b   1722

Sep qtr 1934
George Roper age 91 Chesterfield    7b   615

The first one seems to be best fit, but you must decide!

Should mean George and Susannah would appear in the 1911 census of course..another lead for you.

Just to make it interesting, there is actually a death of a George Smith too!!

Deaths Mar qtr  1918
George Smith age 77 Chesterfield    7b   909

Best wishes,
Barbara

What a coincidence that a George Smith &  a George Roper both died in the same year, at the same age - will be interesting to find out which is the George I am looking for - my gut feeling is that it could turn out to be George Smith! We shall see!!

I wish I lived a little closer, so that i could come and explore the graveyards of Chesterfield - they might p0rove useful! perhaps I'll post a request to see if anyone in the area might have time to have a look around for me.

Hi James,

I know this is an old post but hopefully you will pick it up at some point.  My great-great grandfather was George Roper-Smith who you mentioned in one of your earlier threads.  I am not sure of your connection to the family but I have been reasearching the family and would be interested to know if you go anywhere with this.

Thanks

Zoe

Zoe !
How exciting to hear from you ... I have been helping my best friend with his family tree ... he is descended from George Roper-Smith's daughter Ada - which of his children are you descended from?
