Finding Criminal records 1919 _ 1940
« on: Wednesday 09 February 11 23:32 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know if we are allowed access to criminal records between 1919 - 1940, if so where would we find for the Hackney area, would it be essex?  I know its not covered by the metropolitan police as I have already asked.

Thanks

Sue

Not sure who you spoke to but they are wrong. During the period you refer to it was firmly in the Met's J Division, later G Division. Here's a map from 1929.

There are more maps from various dates on this page.

Yes I can see you are right.
My contact was through an email contact on the mets site. Perhaps who ever it was didn't want to give me any information as had better things to do.

I have been researching the Aviss family tree and an elderly surviving member aged 80 remembers an escapade involving her now deceased uncles many years ago and wants to find out some more, she was a little girl at the time and only remembers little bits.
I have now worked out the date  to have been between 1934 - 1944 and probably around the Hackney / Homerton area.
Ideally I would like to find the newspaper with the article about it.
It involved two brothers Frederick Aviss and Harold Aviss (both deceased) and it was said they forged coins. They were caught and both served six years each. Family say the machine used was in the crime museum, but the met contact said this is not so.

I really need to find time to get and research old newspapers but this is quite difficult time wise. Will do eventually tho.  Thanks Sue

Perhaps it might be better to move this to the Middlesex section if possible please.

Sue, if you contact the Library at Hackney, they may be willing to search local newspapers for you, if you can pin the date down so they don't have to search through too many issues.

Although now may not be a good time to ask, see.... http://www.hackney.gov.uk/ca-archives.htm

I think that might be the best idea as from what I have just learned there is a 75 ruling wherby only records prior to 75 years ago can be publicly accessed. Of course for good reason but problematic for those of us family history hunters.

Pinpointing the date is the difficult bit, I can only go by my elderly relatives childhood memories and working out her childhood years (born 1928), perhaps taking things in from the age of 5 ish to up to maybe her teenage years.

I shall try the library and see what they have to say.

Thank

Sue

Hi Susan,

I've also been trying to investigate the Aviss brothers. Harold was married to my partner's maternal grandmother Rosina may Lewis. He changed his name to Stephen Amos, we're not sure at the moment if it was an alias name because of his criminal past or if it was changed earlier as I believe he went into care. Would be great to share some findings.
